Wind River to Port Carrier Grade Linux, Workbench to Sun UltraSPARC T2

Sun Microsystems, Inc. (NASDAQ:JAVA) and Wind River Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:WIND) announced that Wind River will port its Carrier Grade Linux (CGL) and Workbench development suite to Sun's UltraSPARC T2 chip multithreading (CMT) processor. Wind River Platform for Network Equipment, Linux Edition, will be the first carrier grade Linux for Sun's CMT processors. With this announcement, Sun and Wind River will be providing the networking industry with a fully integrated, optimized and tested solution of the industry's leading multicore processing hardware and CGL, enabling companies to quickly develop and deploy next-generation enabled networking applications. Sun's Netra Carrier Grade rack servers and ATCA blades will be the first CMT systems to run Wind River Carrier Grade Linux.

Timesys Offers Embedded LinuxLink Support for Xilinx Virtex-5 FXT FPGA

Timesys Corporation, a premier provider of embedded Linux software solutions, announced LinuxLink support for Virtex®-5 FXT FPGAs, the new system-integration platform from Xilinx with embedded PowerPC® 440 processor cores. With this LinuxLink, subscribers will be provided with a ready to boot embedded Linux platform for Xilinx Virtex-5 FXT FPGAs. The Linux platform includes a 2.6.24 kernel, toolchain, full suite of integrated device drivers and an initial root file system; assembled to run on the Virtex-5 FXT platform's embedded PowerPC® 440 processor cores.

Microsoft Shares Road Map for Windows Embedded

At Embedded Systems Conference Silicon Valley 2008 in San Jose, Microsoft Corp. laid out the next phase in its strategy for the Windows Embedded Business, providing a strategic road map outlining the renaming of its family of products and plans for new solutions in key device categories. The new key device category solutions will be offered under the Windows Embedded Ready name and will ship as preconfigured toolkits providing device-makers with in-demand market-specific features that allow them to build and ship next-generation smart, connected, service-oriented devices in an accelerated fashion.

Microsoft Reveals Details of SPARK Your Imagination Embedded Program

At the Embedded Systems Conference, Microsoft Corp. rolled out the full details about its SPARK Your Imagination community-focused program, a joint agreement between Microsoft and select hardware vendors to bring a complete offering of hardware and software to nonprofessional developers through a simple and affordable engagement model. The program offerings have an estimated retail value of $1,300 and will be available immediately worldwide at prices ranging from $250 to $350.

MontaVista Introduces Mobilinux for TI OMAP3430 Processor
