National Instruments announced a new version of its intuitive drag-and-drop software that powers the LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT 2.0 robotics kits for retail and education. With this system, children as young as 9 years old can design their own robots using new features such as color recognition, Bluetooth support and additional robot models that offer children more options to express their creativity. The software, which will be included with all LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT 2.0 kits, is based on the widely adopted NI LabVIEW graphical programming software, which provides children easy-to-use, drag-and-drop functionality to program their robotic creations. With this software, students simply drag and drop icons that are representative of the various tasks they want their robots to perform, similar to how professional engineers and scientists control today’s latest robotics with LabVIEW.

Xilinx, Inc. (Nasdaq: XLNX) announced that its programmable solutions enabled the second straight win for Xi’an Jiao Tong University in the seventh international Robocon competition, hosted in Pune, India. Robocon is a prestigious event in which engineering students compete to design the best robot for a specific challenge. Initiated by the Asia Pacific Broadcasting Union in 2002, the annual competition is designed to foster strategic thinking, leadership and team-building skills. The Xilinx sponsored team, from Xi’an Jiao Tung University, first won the right to represent China earlier this year at a national competition held in Beijing. The team advanced to the finals where they defeated 16 other teams from across the Middle East and Asia to win the Robocon 2008 competition. The first-place winners will be featured on the China Central Television Network over the National Day holiday this week.

Energid Technologies Corporation announced a major upgrade to its popular software for controlling and simulating robots. Based on software developed for NASA, Actin 2.0(TM) will enable new robotic designs across industries and support development from conception through productization and fielding. The Actin 2.0 toolkit provides advanced algorithms and software for controlling even the most complex robots, including those with 100 or more degrees of freedom. With only a CAD model, a roboticist can create a powerful control system and immediately test it in simulation. The software supports fixed and mobile robots with any number of moving parts and virtually any kind of articulation. Actin 2.0 optimizes robot motion for strength, improves accuracy, reduces joint torque, recovers from hardware errors, avoids joint limits, and avoids collisions.

Robots today are making a considerable impact on many aspects of modern life, from industrial manufacturing to healthcare. Reaching for the human frontier, robotics is also vigorously engaged in the growing challenges of new emerging domains. Interacting, exploring, and working with humans, the new generation of robots will increasingly touch people’s lives. The prospect of practical robots among humans follows half a century of robotic developments that established robotics as a modern scientific discipline.
