Cadence Acquires Tensilica for $380 Million

Cadence Design Systems acquired Tensilica for about $380 million in cash. Tensilica is a leader in dataplane processor IP core licensing with over 200 licensees. Tensilica’s configurable dataplane processing units are optimized for embedded data and signal processing. The IP cores are ideal for mobile wireless, network infrastructure, auto infotainment and home applications. As of December 31, 2012, Tensilica had approximately $30 million in cash.

Tensilica will help Cadence provide designers with a more complete SoC solution that will speed the development of innovative and differentiated products, while reducing time to market. The acquisition will Cadence the ability to accelerate IP subsystem development and integration while providing a more extensive support network.

Dataplane processors (DPUs) combine the best capabilities of DSPs and CPUs while delivering 10 to 100x the performance because they can be optimized using Tensilica’s automated design tools to meet specific and demanding signal processing performance targets. Tensilica offers standard cores and hardware/software solutions that can be used as is or easily customized by semiconductor companies and OEMs for added differentiation.

Tensilica customized DPUs augment traditional custom hardware design, offering both time-to-market and programmability advantages and can be optimized to achieve optimal power, performance and area efficiency. Tensilica IP provides application-optimized subsystems that work synergistically with industry-standard CPU architectures.
