Electronic Design Automation Revenue Grew by 12.8% in Fourth Quarter

According to the EDA Consortium Market Statistics Service, revenue for the electronic design automation industry grew to $1700.1 million in the fourth quarter of 2011. This is an increase of 12.8% compared to the fourth quarter of 2010 ($1507.7 million). Revenue continued to grow in CAE, IC Physical Design and Verification, SIP, and Services compared to the fourth quarter of 2010. Geographically, the Americas, Europe/Middle East/Africa, and Asia/Pacific posted double-digit increases.

Sequential EDA revenue for Q4 2011 grew 10.1% compared to Q3 2011. In addition, the four-quarters moving average increased by 16%. The four-quarters moving average compares the most recent four quarters to the prior four quarters.

The EDAC MSS report tracked companies that employed 27,623 professionals in Q4 2011, an increase of 3.2% compared to the 26,767 people employed in Q4 2010, and up 1.7% compared to Q3 2011.

Revenue by Product Category

  • Computer Aided Engineering (CAE)
    Revenue grew 11.9% to $644.8 million in Q4 2011 (compared to Q4 2010). The four-quarters moving average increased 14.2%.

  • IC Physical Design & Verification
    Compared to Q4 2010, revenue increased to $392.4 million in Q4 2011. The four-quarters moving average grew 17.3%.

  • Printed Circuit Board and Multi-Chip Module (PCB & MCM)
    This category decreased to $139.7 million in Q4 2011 (a 15.6% drop compared to Q4 2010). The four-quarters moving average for PCB & MCM grew by 8.7%.

  • Semiconductor Intellectual Property (SIP)
    Revenue grew by 13.4% to $432.2 million in Q4 2011 (compared to Q4 2010). The four-quarters moving average increased 21.6%.

  • Services
    Compared to Q4 2010, revenue increased by 9.8% to $90.9 million in Q4 2011. The four-quarters moving average grew 11%.

Revenue by Region

    The Americas
    This region increased by 12.8% to $726.3 million (compared to Q4 2010). The four-quarters moving average grew by 19.3%.

    Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA)
    Q4 2011 revenue grew to $306.1 million, which is a 11.8% increase compared to Q4 2010. The four-quarters moving average increased 10.9%.

    Japan
    Revenue decreased by 10.5% to $248.1 million (compared to Q4 2010). The four-quarters moving average for grew by 8.1%.

    Asia/Pacific (APAC)
    This region increased to $419.6 million in Q4 2011 (a 34% increase compared to Q4 2010). The four-quarters moving average grew 20.4%.
