Electronic Design Automation Grew in the Second Quarter

According to the EDA Consortium (EDAC) Market Statistics Service (MSS), the Electronic Design Automation (EDA) industry grew to $1438.1 million in the second quarter of this year. That’s a 17.6% increase compare to the second quarter of last year ($1222.9 million). However, compared to the first quarter of this year, sequential EDA revenue dropped by 0.6%. The four-quarters moving average increased by 16.3%. Companies that were tracked in the report employed 26,721 professionals in the second quarter, which is a 1% increase compared to the first quarter. Compared to the second quarter of last year, employment was up 2.9%.

Revenue by Product Category

  • Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) revenue grew to $549.8 million in Q2 2011 (19.8% increase over Q2 2010). The four-quarters moving average increased by 17.3%.
  • IC Physical Design and Verification revenue increased by 5.8% to $286.9 million in Q2 2011 (compared to Q2 2010). The four-quarters moving average increased 9%.
  • Printed Circuit Board and Multi-Chip Module (PCB & MCM) revenue grew to $144.9 million (21.7% increase compared to Q2 2010). The four-quarters moving average for PCB and MCM increased 17%.
  • Semiconductor Intellectual Property (SIP) revenue grew by 22.6% to $367.7 million in Q2 2011 (compared to Q2 2010). The four-quarters moving average increased 25.1%.
  • Services revenue was $88.8 million in Q2 2011 (19.9% increase compared to Q2 2010). The four-quarters moving average increased 3.6%.

Revenue by Region

  • Q2 2011 revenue in the Americas increased by 21.1% to $626.1 million (compared to Q2 2010). The four-quarters moving average for the Americas increased 17.7%.
  • Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) Q2 2011 revenue was $246.5 million (8.8% increase compared to Q2 2010). The EMEA four-quarters moving average increased 8.4%.
  • Japan Q2 2011 revenue grew by 17.8% to $253.9 million (compared to Q2 2010). The four-quarters moving average for Japan increased 11.1%.
  • Revenue in Asia/Pacific (APAC) region increased to $311.6 million in Q2 2011 (18.1% increase compared to Q2 2010). The four-quarters moving average increased 26%.
