Electronic Design Automation Revenue Increased by 16% in Q1 2011

The Electronic Design Automation (EDA) industry revenue increased to $1446.4 million in the first quarter of 2011. According to the EDA Consortium (EDAC) Market Statistics Service (MSS), this is a 16% increase from Q1 2010, which had revenues of $1247.0 million. Compared to the fourth quarter of 2010, sequential EDA revenues decreased by 4.1%. The four-quarters moving average increased by 14.2%. The four-quarters moving average compares the most recent four quarters. Companies that were tracked employed 26,457 professionals in Q1 2011, a 1.2% decrease compared to the 26,767 people employed in Q4 2010, but up 1.4% compared to Q1 2010.

Revenue by Product Category

  • The Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) category generated revenue of 530.6 million in Q1 2011. This is a 15.7% increase over Q1 2010. The four-quarters moving average for CAE increased 12.9%.
  • IC Physical Design & Verification revenue increased 16.1% to $318.5 million in the first quarter (compared to Q1 2010). The four-quarters moving average increased 7.6%.
  • Printed Circuit Board and Multi-Chip Module (PCB & MCM) revenue increased to $140.4 million (a 28.3% increase compared to Q1 2010). The four-quarters moving average for PCB & MCM increased by 14.9%.
  • Semiconductor Intellectual Property (SIP) revenue grew by 15.7% to $371.4 million in the first quarter (compared to Q1 2010). The four-quarters moving average increased by 27.9%.
  • Services revenue totaled $85.6 million in Q1 2011, which is an increase of 2.2% compared to Q1 2010. The four-quarters moving average decreased 2.1%.

Revenue by Region

  • In Q1 2011, $602.4 million of EDA products and services were purchased. This is a 22.2% increase compared to Q1 2010. The four-quarters moving average for the Americas increased 12.8%.
  • In Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA), revenues increased 7.8% to $241.8 million in the first quarter in Q1 2011 (compared to Q1 2010). The EMEA four-quarters moving average increased 7.9%.
  • Japan saw revenue of $295.3 million, which is a 17.7% increase compared to Q1 2010. The four-quarters moving average for Japan increased 6.9%.
  • The Asia/Pacific (APAC) region revenue increased to $307.0 million in the first quarter, which is a 10% increase compared to the same quarter in 2010. The four-quarters moving average increased 31.7%.
