Electronic Design Automation Industry Grew by 19.4% in Q4 2010

According to the EDA Consortium (EDAC) Market Statistics Service (MSS), the Electronic Design Automation (EDA) industry revenue increased to $1507.7 million in the fourth quarter of 2010. That’s a 19.4% increase compared to the $1262.7 million generated in Q4 of 2009. Compared to the third quarter of 2010, Q4 revenues grew by 15.4%. The four-quarters moving average (the most recent four quarters compared to the prior four quarters) was 11.3%. The EDAC research tracked 26,767 professionals in Q4 2010, which is a 1.1% increase compared to the 26,474 people employed in Q3 2010. Compared to Q4 2009, the increase was 3%.

Q4 2010 Revenue by Product Category

  • Computer Aided Engineering (CAE)
    Revenue totaled 576.5 million in Q4 2010 (19.5% increase compared to Q4 2009). The four-quarters moving average for CAE increased 10.9%.
  • IC Physical Design and Verification
    Generated revenue of $301.8 million in Q4 2010 (2.8% increase over Q4 2009). The four-quarters moving average increased 1.0%.
  • Printed Circuit Board and Multi-Chip Module (PCB & MCM)
    Revenue increased to $165.6 million (26% increase over Q4 2009). The four-quarters moving average for PCB & MCM increased 6.1%.
  • Semiconductor Intellectual Property (SIP)
    Revenue grew to $381.0 million in Q4 2010 (39.7% increase over Q4 2009). The four-quarters moving average increased 33.9%.
  • Services
    Revenue totaled $82.8 million in Q4 2010, an increase of 0.1 percent compared to Q4 2009. The four-quarters moving average decreased 8.7%.

  • The Americas
    Generated $643.8 million of EDA products and services in Q4 2010 (14.8% increase from Q4 2009). The four-quarters moving average for the Americas increased 7.5%.
  • Revenue in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA)
    Generated revenues of $273.7 million in Q4 2010 (7.2% increase over Q4 2009). The EMEA four-quarters moving average increased by 6.0%.
  • Japan
    Accounted for $277.2 million in Q4 2010 (17.3% increase over Q4 2009). The four-quarters moving average increased by 0.6%.
  • Asia/Pacific (APAC)
    Fourth quarter 2010 revenue increased to $313.1 million (48.9% increase compared to Q3 2009). The four-quarters moving average increased 39.6%.
