Movea Introduces MotionIC Platform for Motion Processing, Control

Movea, the global leader in motion-sensing and motion control, is building on its twenty years of experience in the pioneering of motion sensing consumer electronics and its extensive development and patenting of motion processing technologies to launch its new MotionIC[tm] Platform. Movea’s MotionIC offering includes chips and chipsets, SmartMotion[tm] firmware, software API’s and developer kits, and IP that will enable OEM’s, Set Top Box (STB) suppliers, Digital TV Manufacturers and Service Providers to rapidly adopt and integrate 2 to 9 axes of motion processing and control into their product solutions.

A major market focus for MotionIC is in-air motion control solutions for the PayTV industry, STB market and Digital TV markets where Movea’s award-winning, motion-sensing technology adds new levels of interactivity and ease-of-use, benefitting from the experience gained from over three million Air Mouse[tm] units sold under its Gyration brand name (Gyration Air Mouse pictured right). Movea will be announcing two contracts with key players in the remote control manufacturing market at IBC 2010 in Amsterdam.

“Digital Television and connectivity in the home is changing from being a passive experience watching TV to an interactive one – thanks to advanced Graphical User Interfaces and the new breed of STB that Service Providers are deploying,” explained Sam Guilaumé, CEO at Movea. “Adding SmartMotion by Movea will transform the user experience; providing a natural, intuitive way to interact with your TV by using simple hand movements and gestures to navigate media and content. It transforms the user interface of home entertainment systems in the same way that having a mouse transforms a computer. For PayTV operators, it provides new opportunities to increase ARPU (Annual Revenue Per User) such as interactive games that use these motion sensitive remote controls.”

Navigation with traditional remote controls uses buttons that only allow you to move up, down, left and right. This is barely adequate for today’s 2 dimensional, grid-based on-screen TV guides which have grown in size to many hundreds of channels. If you add the need to navigate through, and interact with, new web-based services, traditional remote control buttons become a very cumbersome way to navigate today’s digital media experience. Movea’s SmartMotion processing capabilities give a remote control device the ability to easily navigate next generation TV services in a brilliantly simple and intuitive manner much like the experience of using a Wiimote.

“Adding motion adds new dimensions to the user experience,” added Paul O’Donovan, Principal Analyst at Gartner’s Semiconductor Group. “Gone are the days of fiddling with a multitude of tiny buttons and trying to work a mouse on a sofa cushion. Motion and gesture sensing is at the centrepiece of the next generation of remote control devices that are more intuitive and a more natural experience. They will change the way that people interact with the growth of digital media and content in the home. What sets Movea apart from other companies offering motion technologies is their wide range of expertise from having developed motion solutions for a variety of applications over 20 years whereas rivals tend to only have experience in just one particular area.”

Movea’s advanced SmartMotion technology also features jitter control that removes accidental shakes of the hand to give elegant, smooth movements with a high resolution for ease of use. Movea SmartMotion solutions also feature market leading patented Gesture Recognition capabilities that offer Service Providers benefits such as gesture-based sign-in to user profiles for parental control of TV content as well as easy access to personal favourites and preferences. This, combined with Movea’s 250 plus patents, ensures manufacturers have access to a wide range of SmartMotion solutions for rapid time to market and outstanding product differentiation.

Movea has four gyroscope-driven SmartMotion remote control reference designs available. These range from turnkey, ready-to-use solutions, through to customisable offerings where gestures and buttons can be assigned to activate important features in the STB User Interface. Movea’s deep experience and history with its Gyration brand of CE products ensures that the technologies behind these reference designs are fully proven and market-ready. A key feature of MotionIC-based reference designs is their best in class wireless range of up to 30m (100 feet) based on 2.4GHz and RF4CE radio technologies which have no line-of-sight limitations, a drawback of traditional infrared remotes.
