SMIC, Virage Logic Offer IP on 65nm Low-leakage Process

Virage Logic Corporation (Nasdaq: VIRL), the semiconductor industry’s trusted IP partner, and Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC; NYSE: SMI and SEHK: 0981.HK), the leading foundry in China, announced the expansion of their longstanding partnership to include the 65-nanometer (nm) low-leakage (LL) process technology. Under the terms of the agreement, System-on-Chip (SoC) designers will have access to Virage Logic’s SiWare Memory compilers, SiWare Logic libraries, SiPro MIPI and Intelli DDR IP on SMIC’s 65nm LL process. This joint agreement is part of Virage Logic’s strategy to expand its business through industry leading foundries and highlights SMIC’s commitment to provide a complete IP solution for its customers.

Greenliant Acquires NAND Drives, Controllers, Assets from Microchip

Microchip Technology Incorporated, a leading provider of microcontroller, analog and Flash-IP solutions, announced the consummation of the sale of certain non-core assets from its Silicon Storage Technology (SST) subsidiary. The product lines sold included NAND Drives, NAND controllers, Smart Card ICs, Combo Memory, Concurrent SuperFlash, Small-Sector Flash and many-time Programmable Flash memories. The buyer, Greenliant Systems Ltd., is a new company founded by Mr. Bing Yeh, the ex-Chairman and CEO of SST. The sale included inventory, equipment, intellectual property and certain other assets and liabilities associated with the product lines. Approximately 100 employees (18% of SST’s workforce) transferred to Greenliant as part of this transaction. SST also agreed to provide certain transition services to Greenliant for up to 90 days. The terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Cadence, IBM to Develop Integration Optimized IP

Cadence Design Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: CDNS), the global leader in EDA360, announced a joint development agreement with IBM to create high-performance integration-optimized IP that will help customers deliver leading-edge designs while reducing the risk and time associated with integrating complex SoC Designs. Under the agreement, the companies will develop DDR PHYs, memory controllers, and protocols such as PCIe and Ethernet under 32-nanometer silicon-on-insulator. The technology will be used in servers, video games and other devices and will be available through the newly announced Cadence® Open Integration Platform.

Kontron Acquires AP Labs Group

Through its US subsidiary, Kontron has acquired 100 percent of US company AP Labs Group, which is based in San Diego, California. The group, which has two operating companies, is regarded as one of the leading system integrators in the areas of defense and aerospace. Since its inception in 1984 the company has firmly established itself on the market for the development and series production of highly complex and robust computer systems, as well as specialized applications. Kontron anticipates that both new subsidiaries will make an annual revenue of USD 30 million. Kontron intends to integrate AP Labs with its North American headquarters, which is also based in San Diego. Kontron has access to cost-efficient, local production capacities as the result of the company AP Parpro Inc., which also forms part of the group and is located in Mexico, close to Kontron’s NA headquarters.

MathWorks Code Generation Tools Support Eclipse, Embedded Linux

MathWorks announced that its Target Support Package and Embedded IDE Link products now support the Eclipse integrated development environment (IDE) and Embedded Linux through the GNU compiler tool chain. As a result, engineers can automate project creation in Eclipse and deploy real-time embedded systems on Linux using automatically generated code from MATLAB and Simulink models. These capabilities enable engineers using Model-Based Design to rapidly implement and verify algorithms on processors that can run Embedded Linux, such as ARM, Freescale, and Intel.

MIPS Technologies Supports WebM Project, VP8 Video Codec

Mentor Graphics, NetLogic Team on Multi-Core Embedded Linux
