Freescale Sells Virtual Garage to Mentor Graphics

Mentor Graphics Corporation (NASDAQ: MENT) announced that it has acquired the Virtual Garage product line from Freescale, a US-based technology company. Virtual Garage is a software suite that addresses two important topics within the design and management of automotive electrical and electronic systems: the trade-off between value-of-variety and cost-of-complexity caused by optional electronic content; and provision of vehicle-specific design data, such as dynamic electrical schematics, on demand to service networks.

Intel and Nokia Merge Moblin and Maemo Software Platforms

In a significant development in the convergence of communications and computing, Intel Corporation and Nokia are merging their popular Moblin and Maemo software platforms. This will create a unified Linux-based platform that will run on multiple hardware platforms across a wide range of computing devices, including pocketable mobile computers, netbooks, tablets, mediaphones, connected TVs and in-vehicle infotainment systems. Called MeeGo, the open software platform will accelerate industry innovation and time-to-market for a wealth of new Internet-based applications and services and exciting user experiences. MeeGo-based devices from Nokia and other manufacturers are expected to be launched later this year.

Agilent Sells Network Solutions Test Business to JDSU

JDSU announced that it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire the Network Solutions communications test business of Agilent, including the unit’s innovative Long Term Evolution (LTE), or 4G, network verification and deployment products, for $165 million in cash. The parties expect to close the transaction, which is subject to receipt of customary regulatory approvals, in the June calendar quarter 2010.

Micron Acquires Numonyx

STMicroelectronics (NYSE: STM) announced that, together with its partners Intel Corporation and Francisco Partners, it has entered into a definitive agreement with Micron Technology Inc., in which Micron will acquire Numonyx Holding B.V. in an all-stock transaction. The Flash memory joint venture was created by the partners on March 30, 2008.

Mid-Range, 3G Wireless Apple iPad Costs Only $287 to Manufacture

The mid-range, 3G-wireless version of Apple Inc.’s upcoming iPad is expected to carry a combined Bill of Materials (BOM) and manufacturing cost of $287.15, making it the most profitable member of the iPad product line on a percentage basis, according to a virtual teardown generated in part by leveraging iSuppli Corp.’s Mobile Handset Cost Model tool.
