Mobile Handsets, Stationary CE Products Fuel Wi-Fi Chipset Growth
While mobile PCs and portable consumer electronic (CE) devices comprised the lion’s share of Wi-Fi chipset shipments in 2008, mobile handsets and stationary CE categories are driving the market growth, reports In-Stat. In 2008, Wi-/Fi chipsets in mobile handsets grew by more than 51%. By 2010, In-Stat anticipates that this category will exceed 20% of the total Wi-Fi chipset market.
OMG, INCOSE Team on Certification Program for Systems Modeling Language
OMG[tm] and the International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE) announced that they have agreed to work together on the development of OMG’s new program to certify Systems Engineers and other practitioners on the OMG Systems Modeling Language (OMG SysML[tm] ) standard. SysML is a graphical modeling language used to perform Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) – that is, to specify and design complex systems that may include hardware, information, personnel, and facilities in addition to software. The program, to be called OCSMP[tm] (OMG-Certified Systems Modeling Professional), will be OMG’s fourth certification.
STMicroelectronics Ranks First in Automotive Infotainment Chip Market
Defying a flat year for the global automotive infotainment semiconductor market, leading supplier STMicroelectronics NV managed to achieve double-digit revenue growth in 2008 due in part to the success of its Cartesio product, a combined media processor and GPS baseband chip, according to iSuppli Corp. The global automotive infotainment semiconductor market in 2008 generated revenue of $3.4 billion, up a scant 0.6 percent from $3.3 billion in 2007. While the average amount of entertainment and informational electronics content in cars continued to increase in 2008, the infotainment industry suffered from a 6.6 percent decline in global car sales for the year. The infotainment semiconductor industry’s flat growth in 2008 contrasts sharply with its 16.8 percent expansion in 2007.
