Microchip Adds Security Features to KEELOQ Authentication System

Microchip Technology Inc., a leading provider of microcontroller and analog semiconductors, announced it has expanded the security capabilities of the patented KEELOQ® authentication system. The KEELOQ 3 Development Kit (part # DM303007) demonstrates these enhancements to the KEELOQ system with a patented secure-learning algorithm that prevents differential power-analysis attack techniques. Additionally, the technology now supports 128-bit encryption keys, longer data transmissions and bi-directional communication authentication; and also supports alternative encryption algorithms, such as XTEA and AES. This enhanced microcontroller-based encoder solution enables customization, so that further security enhancements can be implemented over time.

Microchip Technology KEELOQ 3 Development Kit (part # DM303007)The low-cost KEELOQ 3 Development Kit is designed to help engineers get up to speed quickly using PIC® microcontrollers (MCUs), and provides everything needed to program, debug and develop secure authentication applications for a variety of markets. The kit comes complete with a controller board containing a 28-pin 8-bit PIC16F886 Flash MCU, two programmable transmitter boards, one receiver board and a PICkit[tm] 2 programmer. All source-code files and application notes are also included. Enhancements over the KEELOQ II development kit enable a robust and reliable system design that is highly configurable and provides scalability across Microchip’s entire 8-, 16- and 32-bit PIC MCU portfolio, to address the needs of almost any secure authentication application. Examples include security systems (keypads, remote sensors and access control); remote keyless entry (automotive) and authentication applications (identity and property).

“Security systems continuously require additional barriers to stay ahead of criminals that utilize more sophisticated methods to attack existing systems,” said Steve Drehobl, vice president of Microchip’s Security, Microcontroller and Technology Development Division. “The KEELOQ 3 Development Kit shows designers how to prevent crypto-analysis and power-analysis attacks, along with providing more flexibility for designers to customize their designs using standard PIC microcontrollers.”
