Posted by Ken Cheung in Networking on Wednesday, March 11, 2009

American Portwell Technology, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Portwell, Inc., a world-leading innovator and supplier of Network Security Appliances, and a member of the Intel® Embedded and Communications Alliance, announces CATO-2000, a new System-on-a-Chip (SoC) 1U communication appliance platform based on the Intel EP80579 Integrated Processor with Intel QuickAssist Technology (the new Intel SoC solution with built-in security features). By using the Intel EP80579 processor, the CATO-2000 maximizes power efficiency and performance to provide up to 30 percent power savings when compared with traditional Intel Architecture (IA).

CATO-2000 supports DDR2 800/533 ECC or non-ECC memory up to 4 GB; four GbE ports onboard; three Gigabit Ethernet interface via RGMII with hardware security acceleration; one PCI-E x1 GbE interface for extended networking application; optional two segments Ethernet bypass function; security services and bulk crypto for IPSec, VPN, Firewall, SSL, IP Forwarding and TCP Proxy, and Content Filtering. Expansion capabilities include one PCI-E x4 slot for add-on card or additional 4 GbE ports.

Available now, CATO-2000 joins the CATO-3000 as part of Portwell’s EP80579-based family and is the ideal platform solution for Network Security such as Firewall, VPN, IDS/IPS, Anti-Spam, Anti-Virus, and UTM; Network Management such as routers, RAS gateways, QoS, wireless controllers, and streaming. Other applications include medical DICOM and PACS, industrial automation control via Ethernet and TCP/IP.

Intel EP80579 processor and QuickAssist Technology
“CATO-2000 is RoHS compliant and takes full advantage of the latest Intel EP80579 processor and QuickAssist Technology,” says Mark Huang, product marketing manager for American Portwell Technology. “The EP80579 Software for Security Applications package supports the implementation of Intel QuickAssist Technology on the integrated accelerators of the SoC. The QuickAssist Technology package provides hardware-based security acceleration drivers, including: bulk encryption; hashing; cipher; public/private key encryption; random number generation and authentications. QuickAssist can also free-up general purpose CPU cycles to support other features,” Huang explains.

Ideal for OEMs in SMB appliance market
CATO-2000 is fast, efficient and economical. It is the perfect answer for network security applications because it not only features excellent performance in a compact 1U rackmount form factor (with 10-inch depth that is designed for OEM branding), but it does so at an attractive price-point,” says Frank Shen, product marketing director for American Portwell Technology. “With a built-in Ethernet bypass function it will appeal to OEMs that target appliances to the small and medium business (SMB) market.”
