Cypress Semiconductor Corp. (NYSE:CY), the market leader in USB, and Legend Silicon Corp., a leading provider of semiconductor solutions for terrestrial digital TV (DTV), introduced a reference design for a DTMB (Digital Terrestrial Multimedia Broadcast – a DTV standard) USB dongle. The Legend MoBLTV[tm] reference design includes the resources to quickly develop a high-performance DTMB dongle that brings television signals to PCs and laptops. It leverages Cypress’s EZ-USB® FX2LP high-speed USB controller to drive Legend Silicon’s LGS-8GL5/LGS-8G75 demodulator.
The DTMB standard covers both fixed and mobile terminals and is targeted to eventually serve more than half of the television viewers in the People’s Republic of China. The RF tuner of the Legend MoBLTV[tm] DTMB dongle selects the appropriate frequency to pass along television signals to the LGS-8GL5/LGS-8G75 demodulator, which converts the signals to an MPEG2-TS transport stream. The EZ-USB FX2LP device controls the demodulator and tuner via an I2C bus, and carries an MPEG2-TS stream to the PC or laptop for viewing. The Legend MoBLTV[tm] reference design includes hardware schematics, Gerber files, firmware, Broadcast Driver Architecture (BDA) driver, demo software, and Microsoft certification.
“The Legend MoBLTV[tm] reference design offers a DTMB dongle that is ready for mass production to bring television to the rapidly growing number of laptop and desktop PCs in China,” said Vikas Dhurka, product marketing manager for Cypress’s high-speed USB products. “Legend Silicon’s demodulator provides a perfect blend of low-power consumption and reception flexibility.”
“In addition to the high quality and ease-of-implementation of the design, Cypress and Legend Silicon have teamed to offer strong customer technical support,” said Stephen Wang, Director of Marketing at Legend Silicon. “Cypress’s industry-leading USB controller technology delivers fast, reliable data transfer, and powers the design by controlling the tuner and demodulator.”
The Legend MoBLTV[tm] DTMB USB Dongle Reference Design is available now through Legend Silicon’s worldwide sales channels. Interested parties can also request a live demo from their local Cypress or Legend Silicon sales representative.
