Texas Instruments Announces TLV320AIC3107 Stereo Audio Codec

A new low-power stereo audio codec from Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) (NYSE: TXN) enables CD quality playback and extends battery life in portable products such as cell phones, portable navigation devices and portable media players. The TLV320AIC3107 codec integrates a stereo headphone amplifier and mono Class-D speaker amplifier to substantially reduce board area and cost by 20 percent when compared to discrete solutions.

VDC Research Comments on Static Analysis Tools

Recently published research by VDC Research indicates that embedded software engineers using a static analysis tool are working on projects with significantly larger average numbers of in-house developed lines of software code than developers not using a static analysis tool. VDC considers static code analysis tools to include solutions ranging from Lint-based syntax parsers to standards’ compliance checkers to tools using more formal methods for verification.

Elma Announces 3U Version of E-frame Chassis

Elma Electronic Inc., a global manufacturer of electronic packaging products, has announced a new 3U version of its E-frame chassis line. The E-frame has been available in heights for 6U backplanes and now accommodates 3U heights. The unit does not have side or back walls around the card cage area, providing easy access for test and development. The E-frame was designed with the high power and cooling requirements for VPX (VITA 46/48) systems. However, any backplane architectures in a 3U height can be used, including VME and CompactPCI.

OMRON Introduces SYSMAC CJ Series Programmable Controllers

OMRON Corporation (TOKYO:6645)(ADR:OMRNY) announced the release of two new products in its SYSMAC CJ series of programmable controllers, CJ2 CPU units and basic I/O units, to markets. Model numbers are as follows. CJ2H CPU units: CJ2H-CPU68, CJ2H-CPU67, CJ2H-CPU66, CJ2H-CPU65 and CJ2H-CPU64. Basic I/O units: CJ1W-ID212, CJ1W-ID233, CJ1W-OD213 and CJ1W-OD234.

Photovoltaic Panels Revenue to Drop by 20%

Bringing an end to eight consecutive years of growth, global revenue for Photovoltaic (PV) panels is expected to plunge by nearly 20 percent in 2009, as a massive oversupply causes prices to drop, according to iSuppli Corp. Worldwide revenue from shipments of panels will decline to $12.9 billion in 2009, down 19.1 percent from $15.9 billion in 2008. A drop of this magnitude has not occurred in the last 10 years and likely has not happened in the entire history of the solar industry.

KPMG Semiconductor Study Reveals Big Decline in Profitability in 2009

As economic conditions and consumer spending continue to deteriorate, semiconductor executives offer views on 2009 revenue growth that continue to turn more pessimistic, and anticipate a steep decline in profitability over the next 12 to 18 months, according to a recent global survey of semiconductor company executives conducted by KPMG LLP, the U.S. audit, tax and advisory firm. In addition, the majority of executives see R&D and CapEx investment decreasing significantly next year, and see significant workforce contraction in a period where the need for critical workforce skills is high.
