Type 2 COM Express Becoming Standard for COM Express Modules

Posted by Ken Cheung in Boards, Busses,Research on Tuesday, November 25, 2008

According to a study recently published by VDC Research Group, Type 2 COM Express has become the flavor of choice for COM Express modules. This research on the Computer-On-Modules (COMs) market, part of VDC’s annual Merchant Computer Boards Research service, found that 82% of all COM Express modules were Type 2 in 2007. The COM Express specification allows for five “types,” differing in connectors and pin-outs.

COM Express modules by type - VDC Research Group

Type 1 COM Express modules were the second most popular flavor of COM Express modules in 2007, with a 10% share of all COM Express module shipments and are projected to grow to 21% by 2010. Type 2 is projected to remain the clear module type of choice for COM Express in 2010 with a 72% Share.

“What’s key about this data point is that a standard has emerged out of the five types of COM Express modules, which is important because it keeps the market from fracturing. When you have a wide distribution of different standards it leads to a fragmented market, which can in turn cause customer confusion at the cost of delayed market adoption,” said Eric Heikkila, Director of VDC’s Embedded Hardware and Systems Practice.
