USRobotics, a Platinum Equity company and a leading provider of Internet access and networking products, announced it has enhanced two of its most popular embedded controller modems to support Linux applications. The USR2980-OEM and USR802981-OEM dial-up modems are now compatible with Linux Kernels 2.4 and 2.6 as well as Microsoft[tm] Windows, for use in a wider range of applications – from lottery terminals to medical equipment – while providing high reliability, easy accessibility and minimal use of resources from the host system. The enhanced modems are part of USRobotics’ complete line of embedded dial-up modems for business.
“While broadband connections are the preferred choice for high bandwidth applications, dial-up offers reliability and accessibility in situations where the data is not considerably large in quantity but is highly confidential or of great importance. In these instances, standard ISP connections are simply not good enough,” explained Bruce Swail, CEO at USRobotics. He noted that the PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) used by the USRobotics enhanced controller modems is designed to a much higher standard of availability, which allows for a more direct connection between source and destination and, hence, a more reliable transfer of data.
According to Tony Field, senior product manager for USRobotics, “The number of applications for embedded controller modems is almost limitless and with our newly enhanced models, the missing support of Linux is now covered. This makes for the easiest implementation because the modem supports all of the transmission work, leaving the host to concentrate on the features and functions that the end user needs.” Field added, “The modems are also ‘firmware upgradeable’ to ensure the host system is not compromised with unsupportable parts.”
USR2980-OEM and USR802981-OEM Modems
The enhancement of the USR controller-based modems to include Linux compatibility gives greater support for a wide range of business applications and games, including 64-bit operating systems. They include powerful communications processing functions built right in for faster throughput, rather than sapping a computer’s processing power. They are firmware upgradeable with downloadable software to ensure they continue to meet the changing needs of an application over time. Furthermore, their Quick Connect feature reduces connection time to get online faster while V.PCM Upstream provides 50 percent greater upload speeds.
The new USR2980-OEM and USR802981-OEM embedded controller modems with Linux compatibility are currently available to USRobotics OEM and integrator partners in the U.S. and Europe. These internal business modems are provided in bulk packs of 20 or 50 units. For a complete list of technical specifications, please see the USRobotics Business Embedded Modems.
