MontaVista® Software, Inc., the leader in embedded Linux® commercialization, announced that MontaVista Linux Carrier Grade Edition (CGE) 5.0 now supports Cavium Networks (NASDAQ: CAVM) OCTEON[tm] CN58XX, CN56XX, CN52XX, CN50XX and CN38XX processor families, enabling embedded developers to use the widely adopted MIPS64-based OCTEON architecture to create high-performance multicore applications that are multi-threaded and core-aware while delivering the interoperability, high availability, and field serviceability that carriers need.
As the only Linux in the world that complies with three key industry standards (Carrier Grade Linux 4.0 registration, LSB 3.0 certification, and IPv6 logo certification), only MontaVista CGE is proven to include essential carrier grade features and to interoperate with industry software and hardware. MontaVista Linux brings commercial-grade quality, integration, hardware enablement, expert support and the resources of the MontaVista development community to developers using Cavium OCTEON multicore processors.
“MontaVista customers using Cavium OCTEON multicore processors include many of the world’s largest manufacturers of network equipment,” said Dan Cauchy, senior director of market development, carrier and mobile products for MontaVista Software. “OCTEON processors incorporate advanced multi-layer application acceleration for networking control, data and services applications. These processors have low power consumption levels while delivering unprecedented performance to enable real-time applications such as Layer 2-7 packet processing, which are supported by the real-time capabilities of MontaVista Linux.”
“We have multiple network equipment provider (NEP) customers that ask for MontaVista Linux Carrier Grade Edition due to its quality and reliability,” said Amer Haider, director, strategic marketing and ecosystem development at Cavium. “We have worked closely with MontaVista to make sure that MontaVista Linux enables our customers’ design teams to exploit the high performance of OCTEON CN58XX, CN56XX, CN52XX, CN50XX, and CN38XX processors for control and data plane applications while providing the high level of reliability required by telecom and wireless carriers.”
“We are pleased that MontaVista Linux CGE supports Emerson Network Power’s OCTEON-based packet processing products, including our ATCA-9305 blade and our AMC-9210 module,” said Jorge Magalhaes, vice president, marketing for the Embedded Computing business of Emerson Network Power. “By working closely with MontaVista, we are able to provide leading-edge carrier grade blades and highly available platforms to network equipment providers, providing our customers the freedom to focus their efforts on differentiating services and applications.”
“Carrier grade” is a term for software and hardware products that support public telecommunications and data communications networks. Carrier grade products require extremely high degrees of reliability, scalability and performance to provide an uninterrupted flow of the enormous volume of high-bandwidth data and voice needed for today’s multimedia communications. MontaVista Linux Carrier Grade Edition is the most widely deployed carrier grade Linux solution in the world, and is used by seven of the top eight NEPs, including Alcatel-Lucent, Motorola and NEC.
MontaVista Linux Carrier Grade Edition 5.0 for Cavium OCTEON CN58XX, CN56XX, CN52XX, CN50XX and CN38XX processors is available now from MontaVista directly and through its distributors.
