Round Solutions Creates WLAN Module for Wireless Machine Control

More and more highly sophisticated devices – from the CNC turning lathe to the coffeemaker – can send and receive data via TCP/IP and thus over the Internet. So far, however, a hardwired communications path realised with Ethernet was usually necessary to achieve such an exchange. This often led to quite complicated and thus expensive line installations. Round Solutions now presents a solution on the basis of WLAN.

The module, which is the size of a matchbox, communicates with the WLAN router at 54 or 11 Mbit/s (802.11 g+b); both stacks for TCP/IP and/or UDP are integrated as well as the server for HTTP and E-Mail; special drivers are not necessary. Because the module is programmable using BASIC, specific applications can be integrated quickly and simply. In addition, software interfaces are available for Windows CE and Linux.

The heart of the module is the machine interface. It is competent in the processing of standardized serial data streams like SPI, I2C, UART and CAN. Additionally, eight I/OI ports can be defined by the user. WLAN communication is protected by WEP or WPA coding. Apart from the module with a built-in antenna, Round Solutions also offers a version for the connection of an external radiator. An operating temperature in the range of -30 to 85 degrees C is indicated; for the voltage supply 3.3 V is adequate with a supply current from 100 to 300 mA. For further wireless applications, the module can be combined with the Starter Kit S3, available from Round Solutions. This allows the range of applications to extend to communication via UMTS, GSM/GPRS, CDMA or Bluetooth.
