Arrow Couples Custom Chip Design with ARM Processors, IP

The North American Components business of Arrow Electronics, Inc. (NYSE:ARW) announced an extended relationship with ARM to broaden Arrow’s silicon offering by coupling its custom chip design and logistics capabilities with ARM® industry-standard processors and associated intellectual property. The Custom Logic Solutions group of Arrow’s North American Components business backs its ASIC and foundry offering with over 24 years of ASIC success, including 10 years of integrating ARM processors into multiple ASIC technologies. This agreement adds the established ARM7[tm] and ARM9[tm] family processors, as well as the new ARM Cortex[tm]-M1 processor, to the extensive list of intellectual property offered by the Arrow group.

“Bringing ARM’s processors to Arrow’s custom logic offering is an exciting extension to our longstanding relationship with ARM,” said David West, vice president of engineering and new business development at Arrow. “Licensing ARM’s mainstream processors complements Arrow’s ongoing offering of ARM RealView® development tools, and for the first time brings to customers a one-stop shop for integrating ARM technology into ASIC and foundry designs, as well as emulation environments.”

Customers will be able to port their custom ARM implementation across silicon technologies, maintaining software investment while allowing business model flexibility.

“A key benefit of the ARM architecture for designers is the ability to maximize their software investment as they migrate along the ARM processor roadmap,” said Graham Budd, executive vice president and general manager, Processor Division, ARM. “Arrow is uniquely positioned to extend this benefit, by enabling the broad customer base to maintain an identical ARM implementation across emulation, ASIC and foundry implementations.”

“The addition of ARM IP allows Arrow to provide more options to IBM’s broad client base, building upon the already extensive portfolio of IBM foundry services, IP library and semiconductor manufacturing,” said Steve Longoria, vice president for Semiconductor Solutions, IBM. “Using Arrow to access and integrate ARM technology into IBM semiconductors and preceding emulation vehicles reduces further their risk and accelerates customer time to market.”
