MontaVista® Software, Inc., the leader in embedded Linux® commercialization, announced the immediate availability of MontaVista Linux Carrier Grade Edition (CGE) for the dual-core PA6T-1682M PWRficient(tm) processor from P.A. Semi, Inc., a fabless semiconductor company delivering high-performance, low-power processors. MontaVista CGE is the carrier grade Linux operating system used by 7 of the top 8 network equipment providers (NEPs).
“Carrier grade” is a term for software and hardware products that support public telecommunications and data communications networks. Carrier grade products require extremely high degrees of reliability, scalability, and performance to provide an uninterrupted flow of the enormous volume of high-bandwidth data and voice needed for today’s multimedia communications. Leading NEPs such as Alcatel-Lucent, Motorola, NEC, and others have made MontaVista Linux Carrier Grade Edition the most widely deployed Linux in the carrier grade market.
“MontaVista is seeing a lot of excitement around our software for the PA6T-1682M PWRficient processor,” said Patrick MacCartee, director of product management, MontaVista Software. “Performance and power efficiency are big concerns in all multi-core designs, and a combination of MontaVista’s expertise in real-time processing and Linux power management with P.A. Semi’s cutting-edge high-performance, low-power processors is a winning combination for embedded device developers.”
The PA6T-1682M PWRficient processor redefines power, cost, and throughput efficiency for Power Architecture(tm) technology, delivering high performance with phenomenally low power consumption. For example, running at 2.0 GHz, the P.A. Semi device dissipates just 5-13 watts during typical operations. Depending upon the application, this is three to four times less power consumed than similar high-performance microprocessor platforms.
MontaVista Linux Carrier Grade Edition for the PA6T-1682M PWRficient processor is available now from MontaVista Software.
