CSR Selects Virage Logic Semiconductor IP for BlueCore, UniFi

Virage Logic Corporation (NASDAQ: VIRL), the semiconductor industry’s trusted IP partner and pioneer in Silicon Aware IP(tm), announced that CSR of Cambridge, United Kingdom, a top global supplier of single chip wireless communications products, has licensed Virage Logic’s semiconductor intellectual property (IP) to enable its next-generation technology. CSR will use Virage Logic’s Area, Speed and Power (ASAP(tm)) Memory, Self-Test and Repair (STAR(tm)) Memory and STAR Yield Accelerator products for design of its BlueCore(tm) and UniFi(tm) product lines.

“Our wireless IC designs demand efficiencies in power consumption, silicon area utilization and yield, and our commitment to product quality obligates the highest test and repair coverage available,” said Nick Salter, vice president, IC Integration, CSR. “Virage Logic’s silicon proven memory IP portfolio allows us the flexibility to perform tradeoffs between test time, area, and state-of-the-art diagnostics resulting in optimized product implementations. With Virage Logic, we avoid potential delays associated with memory functionality and yield, particularly on new silicon processes.”

Virage Logic enables companies such as CSR to proceed with confidence through increasingly advanced lithography process nodes. For next-generation Bluetooth product offerings, CSR is using Virage Logic ASAP memories at 90-nanometer (nm) and will migrate to 65nm where Virage Logic has developed a customized ultra-high density ROM compiler to address unique application requirements.

CSR has also adopted Virage Logic’s yield enhancement and silicon debugging tools – STAR Yield Accelerator – to effectively bridge the gap between design and manufacturing disciplines and maximize yield. Introduced in October 2007, the STAR Yield Accelerator enables automated ATE vector generation, user-programmable algorithms, silicon analysis, fault isolation to physical coordinates and classification to be used at the critical semiconductor tape-out, bring-up and volume manufacturing stages.

“We are very pleased to be selected as the trusted IP partner for a market-leading company like CSR, whose ICs are integrated into the majority of Bluetooth devices on the market today,” said Brani Buric, vice president, product marketing and strategic foundry relationships, Virage Logic. “With this partnership, Virage Logic’s IP solutions will provide CSR with critical design and manufacturing advantages as they extend their market dominance through a new generation of Bluetooth and Wi-Fi devices.”

CSR designs single-chip wireless devices for Bluetooth and wireless LAN applications. CSR’s BlueCore(tm) ICs are used in all principal Bluetooth applications, including mobile phones from BenQ, HTC, Motorola, NEC, Nokia, Panasonic, Samsung and Sharp; wireless headsets from Hutchison ’3,’ Jabra, Logitech, Motorola and Plantronics; almost all new models of laptop personal computers with Bluetooth capability introduced since 2003 (including Apple, Dell and IBM); mice and keyboards from Logitech; and in-car communication systems used in Saab, Audi and BMW motor vehicles. BlueCore(tm) ICs are also approved by Microsoft for use with its Windows operating system.

About Virage Logic STAR Memory System and STAR Yield Accelerator
Virage Logic’s STAR Yield Accelerator addresses the requirements of integrated device manufacturers (IDM), fabless and foundry customers to rapidly, cost-effectively and accurately identify, analyze, isolate and classify memory faults as designs are readied for transition from first silicon to volume manufacturing. By doing this automatically within the existing development workflow, STAR Yield Accelerator works in concert with the embedded test-and-repair infrastructure of the STAR Memory System to speed system-on-chip (SoC) time-to-volume and boost the yield percentages of good die per wafer. The STAR Memory System is proven to reduce tape-out schedules for new complex SoCs by weeks and the STAR Yield Accelerator can reduce silicon bring-up by months, reducing overall time-to-volume production.

About Virage Logic
Founded in 1996, Virage Logic Corporation (NASDAQ: VIRL) rapidly established itself as a technology and market leader in providing advanced embedded memory intellectual property (IP) for the design of complex integrated circuits. Today, as the semiconductor industry’s trusted IP partner, the company’s Silicon Aware IP offering (embedded memories, logic libraries and I/Os) includes silicon behavior knowledge for increased predictability and manufacturability. Through its recent acquisition of Ingot Systems, the company has expanded its product offering to include Application Specific IP (ASIP) solutions such as Double Data Rate (DDR) Memory Controllers and design services. Virage Logic’s highly differentiated product portfolio provides higher performance, lower power, higher density and optimal yield to foundries, integrated device manufacturers (IDMs) and fabless customers who develop products for the consumer, communications and networking, hand-held and portable, computer and graphics, automotive, and defense markets. The company uses its FirstPass-Silicon Characterization Lab(tm) for certain products to help ensure high-quality, reliable IP across a wide range of foundries and process technologies. The company also prides itself on providing superior customer support and was named the 2006 Customer Service Leader of the Year in the Semiconductor IP Market by Frost & Sullivan. Headquartered in Fremont, California, Virage Logic has R&D, sales and support offices worldwide.
