Siemens Wireless, Psion Team on Ikon Rugged PDA with Integrated HSDPA

Siemens Wireless Modules, a leading manufacturer of wireless modules and devices, and Psion Teklogix announced at CTIA Wireless 2008, their partnership in bringing Ikôn, the first rugged PDA to integrate HSDPA technology, to the enterprise marketplace. Ikôn integrates Siemens’ MC75 and HC25 modules for GPRS and HSDPA capabilities and combines a sleek, compact and powerful design with robust functionality including Bluetooth®, WiFi and GPS. With HSDPA, Ikôn is capable of transmitting data faster than ever before, thereby improving productivity and efficiency by enabling advanced mobile applications across the enterprise. Additionally, Ikôn is AT&T approved.

“Ikôn represents an engineering victory for Psion Teklogix and Siemens and ultimately for enterprises everywhere that need mobile computing,” said Paul Hetherington, director of business development, Siemens Wireless Modules. “With a joint commitment to success and a strong foundation of several years of partnership, we overcame borders and created an engineering ‘dream team’ located across Germany, Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States to design a superior, first-of-its-kind enterprise PDA.”

The Ikôn packs functionality into a compact, rugged form factor and delivers ergonomics, aesthetics, and ease of use for professionals across varied industries including distribution and transportation, courier, field service, utilities and more. The capability of Ikôn to integrate high speed HSDPA voice and data communication options eliminates the need for multiple devices – effectively reducing capital expenditures as well as support costs.

Additionally, GPS and Bluetooth radio options provide customers with more choice to address diverse application requirements. These features enable real-time information management, improved efficiencies and increased asset visibility across a customer’s operations. The highest battery capacity available in this segment ensures full-day productivity for mobile workers while a uniquely engineered internal antenna improves durability.

“Working together with the Siemens modules team as a partner, we began from the ground level to design a communications module that would meet the communications needs of enterprises requiring anytime, anywhere mobile computing,” said James Poulton, Director of Product Management, Psion Teklogix. “Whether reading barcodes with the integrated imager or scanner, using the camera to take color pictures or sending reports back to the home office, Ikôn increases efficiency and productivity in the field.”
