Korenix has published an Industrial PoE white paper that provides a brief summary and overview of the technology. The white paper is available for download (1MB PDF file, reproduced with permission of Korenix). The document briefs PoE technology and discusses the concerns for practical PoE deployment especially in industrial environments.

Power over Ethernet (PoE) is an evolving technology designed to deliver power and transmit data on an Ethernet cable at the same time. Modeling after the technology used in telecommunication systems which supplies power to telephones, PoE powers network devices without the need of AC electrical outlets.
