Vitesse Semiconductor Corporation (Pink Sheets:VTSS) is expanding its recently announced VScope(tm) Integrated Circuit (IC)-based waveform viewing technology into the optical transport market. Vitesse has embedded the VScope oscilloscope function into its VSC824x family of 10 Gbps Clock and Data Recovery devices. The VSC824x devices, Vitesse’s industry-leading Electronic Dispersion Compensation (EDC) ICs, allow reception of severely dispersed optical and electrical signals. The combination of EDC and VScope technology provides, for the first time, a remote diagnostic and monitoring capability allowing carriers and data center managers to verify signal integrity of the optical link thus maximizing network up time.
“VScope technology reduces the cost of monitoring 10 Gbps optical links,” said Gary Paules, product marketing manager at Vitesse. “This is the first step in making VScope an integral part of Vitesse’s optical portfolio, offering a revolutionary new way to improve quality of service in optical links.”
The VSC824x products support all the SFP+ applications, 10GBASE-SR, -LR, and -LRM, across the worst case specified PCB channel — each a required element in the build-out of the small-medium enterprise network. As 10 Gbps becomes the dominant line rate, backplane, NIC and copper interconnect speeds will inevitably increase in kind and the VSC824x family is ideally suited to enable this migration by driving and receiving high-speed signals across these applications. Furthermore, the combined VScope and EDC technologies enable faster development cycles by providing system engineers with real-time link diagnostics and a more accurate view of the live waveform from inside the transceiver IC.
This insight into the signal quality can be used to optimally compensate for signal degradation in the link. Relative bit error ratio (BER) and Q factor measurements can also be generated using VScope functionality. VScope telemetry is used to directly optimize the EDC performance, resulting in superior signal quality across multiple physical layers including SFP+, long haul amplified systems and short reach copper interconnects.
Vitesse’s patented technology offers a more accessible and cost-effective signal analysis tool that can be remotely monitored through network connections. VScope technology leapfrogs current signal integrity methods to scan the input data eye within the chip itself and produces the industry’s first offering of true in-line imaging of the real-time data stream on a per-pin basis.
Evaluation boards are available now.
Vitesse at OFC/NFOEC 2008
At the show, Vitesse will be conducting multiple VScope demonstrations utilizing two devices from its VSC824x IC portfolio. Vitesse will also present two papers at OFCNFOEC entitled: “Status of Industry Efforts to Deploy EDC and Advanced Modulation Schemes for Extended Reach Transport Applications” and “Performance Margin Considerations for SFP+ Transceivers.”
