NEC Corporation (NEC) and Kineto Wireless announced their proposal for enabling the mobile industry to quickly define a standard for supporting the deployment of femtocells. The joint proposal, based on the existing 3GPP GAN (Generic Access Network) standard, has been contributed to the 3GPP standards body as part of a femtocell study currently in progress.
While lack of an agreed standard is not expected to delay the commercial deployment of femtocells, it is well understood in the femtocell industry that a formal standard is required before the market can achieve mass market success. The joint NEC and Kineto proposal relates to rapid standardization of the ‘Iu-over-IP’-based femtocell architecture, which enables operators to leverage the Iu-CS/PS interfaces into their existing mobile core network. Specifically, the NEC and Kineto proposal details how a fully defined ‘Iu-over-IP’ interface can quickly be achieved through a few minor extensions to the existing 3GPP GAN standard. The companies believe this proposal represents the most viable option for 3GPP to reach a completed femtocell standard this year.

“The 3GPP GAN standard is a proven approach for extending Iu interface services over the Internet to consumer owned devices,” said Patrick Tao, vice president of technology for Kineto Wireless. “It is the closest thing to a complete a 3GPP Iu-over-IP interface standard and provides a path to achieve that standard in 2008.”

The Iu-over-IP approach is one of two architectures expected to be taken through the standardization process. In addition to taking a lead role in standardizing the Iu-over-IP approach, NEC is actively participating in standardization of a SIP-based approach.
