Cadillac Escalade Platinum SUV Features LED Headlights

OSRAM Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) are shining on a new era in automotive lighting. The Cadillac Escalade Platinum is the first sports utility vehicle (SUV) in the world to offer LED headlights as standard equipment. OSRAM LEDs power all functions in the headlights supplied by Hella KGaA Hueck & Co., a technology leader in automotive lighting innovation, including low beam, high-beam, daytime running lights, position lights and side marker lights. The Escalade Platinum, Cadillac’s luxurious sport utility vehicle will be launched in 2008.

“Creating the most advanced lighting solutions for automobiles is a fundamental part of our core business,” said Wolfgang Lex, Head of the LED business unit at OSRAM Opto Semiconductors. “Advanced headlight design adds safety and value to vehicles, as well as the widest array of design and engineering possibilities, since the small size of LEDs enables them to be seamlessly integrated into even the most sophisticated automotive designs.”

Hella chose high power OSTAR Headlamp LEDs from OSRAM Opto
Semiconductors for the state-of-the-art headlights that each contain seven OSTAR Headlamp LEDs — five for low beam and two for high beam. The daytime running light is made possible by a dimmer that works on the low beam, thus eliminating the need for an extra light source — an intelligent solution made possible with LED technology. Each headlight features a position light comprised of white Advanced Power TOPLED(R)s as well as a yellow Power TOPLED(R) side marker light.

High-luminance light sources
The OSTAR Headlamp LED was developed specifically to meet the requirements of Hella, the headlight manufacturer. It is among the brightest LEDs for use in the automotive sector. With a color temperature of 5500 Kelvin, much higher than the 4000 Kelvin of xenon light, these tiny light sources create a light with the same color impression as natural daylight. The OSTAR is particularly robust and can withstand ambient temperatures from -40 degrees to +125 degrees C. Even when placed near a high-power engine it will continue to provide excellent performance.
