NEC Creates Power Management ICs for Mobile Internet Devices

NEC Electronics America, Inc. announced that it has expanded its product offering to include highly integrated power management ICs (PMICs). The offering targets the next wave of Mobile Internet Devices (MIDs) and integrates compelling applications and services such as Internet and cellular network access, multimedia playback, navigation, gaming, social networking and other innovative Web 2.0 applications.

NEC Electronics’ PMIC solutions combine power management, logic, audio, user interface, connectivity and communications functions to maximize battery life, support high levels of integration and minimize board space. Developed in one of the most advanced process nodes available, the world-class PMIC offering has already proven successful for NEC Electronics America’s parent company, NEC Electronics Corporation. NEC Electronics was one of the top PMIC suppliers in Japan for fiscal year 2006, earning approximately $62 million in PMIC sales revenue.

“With the advent of next generation, high-bandwidth wireless networks, NEC Electronics America sees great potential for Mobile Internet Devices to enrich the lives of end users by allowing them to access information, communicate with friends and family, and experience digital media on the go,” said Kazu Yamada, vice president and general manager, custom SoC solutions strategic business unit, NEC Electronics America. “Our PMIC solutions support this vision for the future by providing industry leading integration and power efficiency.”

NEC Electronics’ highly integrated PMICs are a critical enabling technology for a variety of applications including cellular phones, navigation systems, digital still cameras and portable media player solutions. NEC Electronics America also offers valuable application support and, leveraging NEC Electronics Corporation’s fabrication and assembly facilities located worldwide, the company can support high-volume manufacturing to meet customer demand.

NEC Electronics’ technical expertise in power management and deep system-level knowledge of mobile devices provide PMIC solutions that extend battery life, support high levels of integration, and minimize motherboard space-critical requirements for emerging portable devices. Over the past 15 years, NEC Electronics has demonstrated strong expertise in developing short-turnaround, custom, integrated PMICs.

As an example, the company recently developed a leading-edge, 150-nanometer (nm) PMIC design from fixed specification to design sample in less than five months. Currently in high-volume production, the highly integrated design includes 29 linear dropout regulators (LDOs), two DC/DC converters, audio playback and recording functions, audio volume control and mixing, charger control, headphone/line/receiver drivers, and light-emitting diode (LED) drivers, among other functions.
