Semiconductor Chip Sales Grow by 2.3 % to $23.1 Billion in November

Worldwide sales of semiconductors rose to $23.1 billion in November, an increase of 2.3 percent from November 2006 when sales were $22.5 billion, the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) reported. Sales increased by 0.7 percent from the October sales of $22.9 billion. Year-to-date sales of $231 billion are 2.8 percent ahead of the $225 billion in sales for the like period of 2006.

ABI Research Publishes Report on WiMAX, 4G IP Report

One of the major advantages claimed by the WiMAX community over their cellular cousins is that WiMAX will come with a far lower average royalty rate than either LTE or UMB. A favorite phrase among the WiMAX OEM community is that WiMAX has effectively “democratized” the 4G space. Although ABI research applauds the move to a more widespread intellectual property holding in the 4G realm, it could be argued that this democratization of IP will result in more, not fewer, IP royalties.

Personal Robots Market to Grow to $15 Billion

The 2007 holiday season marks the rise of personal robots as mainstream consumer items. The latest catalog from US gadget-retailer Sharper Image, for example, is full of robotic products, under the slogan, “Shop for Bots.” A new study by ABI Research forecasts that this market will be worth $15 billion by 2015.

ABI Research Sees Poor Market Outlook for Ultra Mobile Broadband

The prospects for widespread adoption of Qualcomm’s flagship 4G technology UMB (Ultra Mobile Broadband) are dim, according to a new study from ABI Research. But Qualcomm’s intellectual property portfolio is strong in key enabling technologies for 4G, and the company faces no real threat to its long-term future even without successful UMB network rollouts.

TSMC Offers Multi-layer Mask Service for 90nm, 80nm, 65nm Processes

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, Inc. (TSE: 2330, NYSE: TSM) announced the foundry industry’s first multi-layer mask service (MLM) for 90nm, 80nm and 65nm advanced process technologies. MLM service is another mask service TSMC offers beyond multi-project wafer prototyping service, CyberShuttle(SM), and normal production tape-out to enable maximum customer flexibility. MLM is especially appropriate for prototyping single or multi-chip verifications or small volume production runs.

SMIC Licenses IBM’s 45nm CMOS Technology for 300mm Wafer Foundry
