Xirrus Publishes Wi-Fi, Payment Card Industry Compliance Whitepaper

Posted by EDA Geek News Staff in Wireless on Monday, November 19, 2007

Xirrus, Inc., the only provider of high-performance, long-range Wi-Fi products, announced the availability of a new tool and whitepaper explaining the PCI (Payment Card Industry) Data Security Standard for companies that use Wi-Fi and handle payment card information.

Many companies have a large investment in hardware that only supports WEP such as scanners and payment card terminals but are looking to transition away from WEP encryption as it may soon no longer be a valid for PCI compliance.

Recent breaches of company networks such as that at TJ Maxx have incurred costs and fines that easily exceed $1 billion are forcing CIOs to rethink their use of legacy WEP encryption for wireless networking. There are specific PCI requirements for securing Wi-Fi networks and the new whitepaper details these and additional wireless recommendations along with a checklist for ensuring a compliant wireless network.

Xirrus is also releasing a new feature that automatically audits the Xirrus wireless network to ensure continued compliance to the PCI standard and automatically generates alerts on any non-complying elements. Xirrus is also works with third parties such as VeriSign to ensure the worthiness of Xirrus products in a PCI compliant network and additionally supports the latest WPA2 encryption, strong authentication, firewalling and intrusion detection that goes beyond PCI requirements for a wireless network.

Xirrus provides secure Wi-Fi networking to the retail, hospitality, and other commerce-oriented environments and removes complexity from deploying and managing a Wi-Fi network. The automatic assurance of PCI compliance helps customers save time and increases their confidence in upcoming audits.

The whitepaper (pdf) can be downloaded.

The Payment Card Industry (PCI) Data Security Standard was developed by major credit card companies to help those that process credit card transactions (or cardholder information) in order to secure cardholder information and protect it from unauthorized access, fraud and other security issues.
