Toumaz Receives IET Innovation in Engineering Award

Posted by Ken Cheung in Other on Friday, November 16, 2007

Toumaz Technology Limited, the leading provider of ultra-low power wireless infrastructure for body monitoring solutions, won the Electronics category in the Institution of Engineering and Technology’s (IET) prestigious Innovation in Engineering Awards, presented on Tuesday night at a ceremony in The Marriott Grosvenor Square, London, hosted by TV personality and science enthusiast Johnny Ball.

Toumaz Technology’s entry, ‘Connected Freedom – Sensium(TM) Ultra Low-Power Wireless Body Monitoring System’, is an ultra-low power smart sensor which can continuously monitor multiple vital health signs such as such as heart rate, body temperature and respiration remotely, without the need for bulky non-mobile equipment. This ‘digital plaster’, worn by the patient, can transfer data to a base station where an electronic medical record is kept.

The chairman of the judging panel, said: “The judges really liked this entry. It is an innovative ultra-low-power integrated circuit design applied in a highly valuable medical application, where it provides enabling technology to connect mobile individuals to healthcare providers – simply, affordably and unobtrusively. Truly a technology that improves quality of life.”

After receiving the Award Toumaz Technology’s Co Founder and Chief Operating Officer Keith Errey said: “We are absolutely delighted that the groundbreaking Sensium sensor interface and transceiver platform won this important Award. Sensium enables real-time, intelligent, ultra-low power wireless monitoring of multiple vital signs – such as ECG, heart rate, body temperature, respiration and physical activity (via a 3-axis accelerometer) – via standard handheld devices such as mobile phones.”

Toumaz Technology Chairman and Co-Founder Professor Chris Toumazou added: “It is great to see our platform technology out there and receiving such a positive response from global healthcare, medical device and pharmaceutical companies, and now Award judges too.”

The unique combination of ultra-low power wireless and signal processing in one small System-on-Chip (SOC) allows the economies of scale of the semiconductor industry to be harnessed to provide highly functional, robust, low cost, disposable and non-intrusive monitors for a wide range of healthcare and lifestyle management applications.
