Monotype Imaging Debuts iType Font Engine for Windows Embedded CE 6.0 R2

Monotype Imaging Inc. (NASDAQ: TYPE), a leading global provider of text imaging solutions, has announced that its iType® font engine is available for evaluation as an installable option for the Microsoft Windows Embedded CE 6.0 R2 operating system. Designed for memory-constrained environments, the iType font engine enables manufacturers and developers to build connected consumer and enterprise devices with multilingual, scalable fonts engineered for high-quality display.

“Fonts are a critical component in bringing product differentiation to today’s rapidly evolving and crowded consumer electronics marketplace, yet many manufacturers and developers are still in the process of discovering this,” said John Seguin, executive vice president of Monotype Imaging. “Through the power of visual expression, fonts can expand opportunities to build more engaging or interactive products, such as networked and interactive digital televisions, set-top boxes, digital cameras and camcorders, portable media players and navigation devices. By working closely with Microsoft, we’re making it easier to exploit the power of fonts to convey themes, build brand, create memorability, evoke emotion, command attention, or simply make text easier to read.”

“We are very pleased that Monotype Imaging’s iType font engine will now support the new features and enhancements in Windows Embedded CE 6.0 R2,” said Dan Javnozon, senior product manager with Windows Embedded at Microsoft Corp. “With Windows Embedded CE 6.0 R2, Microsoft is providing partners like Monotype Imaging with an array of development components, allowing their customers to differentiate their innovative consumer and enterprise products while offering exciting connected experiences.”

The iType font engine supports OpenType and TrueType®-based fonts along with the company’s stroke-based font technology. Standard features include Monotype Imaging’s patent-pending SmartHint(TM) technology, a character fine-tuning solution for ensuring the clear display of East Asian text, including text with intricately shaped characters scaled to small sizes. Also featured is a font linking capability, designed to improve memory efficiency when handling multiple font files, common when supporting multiple languages.

“Our solution is much more than a small-footprint text rendering option, although the ability to reduce memory requirements and more flexibly manage device memory footprint are significant,” said David Gould, director of product marketing at Monotype Imaging. “For example, our GBK Simplified Chinese SmartHint solution requires 43 percent or 1.7 MB less memory on the device, compared to using a similar GBK Simplified Chinese TrueType font available from the Windows Embedded CE kit. However, beyond the details of storage savings, developers are looking to more cost-effectively incorporate multilingual, highly legible fonts within shortened development cycles. Our solution enables this, while opening access to our diverse selection of multilingual fonts. We’ve also partnered with typeface foundries in regions such as Japan, Korea and China to bring forward designs created by local experts.”

The iType font engine for Windows Embedded CE 6.0 R2 is available for evaluation purposes. Source code as well as a license to ship the technology within commercial products must be obtained directly from Monotype Imaging, a Silver level member of the Microsoft Windows Embedded Partner Program. Developers may contact Monotype Imaging for custom configurations or to receive updates of the iType font engine when newer versions become available.
