Leadis Technology Samples Charge-pump LED Drivers for Mobile Devices

Leadis Technology, Inc. (Nasdaq:LDIS), an analog and mixed-signal semiconductor developer of color display drivers, LED drivers, and audio ICs for mobile consumer electronic devices, announced sample availability of the LDS8866, LDS8865, and LDS8864, a new family of charge-pump based LED drivers that uses the company’s proprietary PowerLite(TM) Current Regulator to deliver up to 95% power efficiency for longer battery life.

Targeted at mobile backlighting applications, the latest LED driver device family supports up to six LEDs with a maximum current of 32mA per channel. The on-chip Non-volatile memory (NVM) allows users to pre-set the maximum current of each of three LED banks, eliminating the need for external resistors. On-chip dimming of LED currents is controlled through a designer friendly Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) interface.

Leadis’ ultra low voltage dropout PowerLite(TM) Current Regulator provides a typical transition threshold of only 50mV, allowing the device to stay in the highest-efficiency mode longer than competition. Additionally, it also solves one of the most significant problems associated with charge-pump based LED Drivers, namely the transition between the high-efficiency state (1x-mode) and the lower efficiency states. By lowering the drop out voltage of the driver to only 50mV, battery life can be extended by up to 20%. For improved system current matching, the maximum LED current is factory preset from integrated NVM. For dynamic brightness control, a PWM interface is available.

The LDS8866 is a high-efficiency multi-mode fractional charge pump with ultra low dropout voltage that can drive up to six LEDs. Inclusion of a 1.33x fractional charge pump mode and ultra low dropout PowerLite(TM) Current Regulator increases the efficiency up to 95%. The 1.33x mode requires no additional external capacitors. The PWM1/PWM2 logic inputs function as a chip enable and a PWM mode LED brightness control. The maximum LED current is factory preset and can be programmed in the range from 0.5mA to 32mA in 0.5mA steps. The multi-fractional charge pump supports a wide range of input voltages from 2.7V to 5.5V. The device is available in a 16-lead TQFN 3mm x 3mm package with a maximum height of 0.8mm.
