MontaVista Software, Inc., the leading provider of Linux® for intelligent devices and communications infrastructure, announced that the company has joined the nonprofit SCOPE Alliance, an association of leading Network Equipment Providers (NEPs) with the mission of enabling and promoting the availability and interoperability of open carrier grade base platforms based on commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) building blocks. SCOPE is a program of the IEEE Industry Standards and Technology Organization (IEEE-ISTO).
“SCOPE is pleased to welcome MontaVista Software to the Alliance,” said Magnus Karlson, chairman of the SCOPE Alliance. “MontaVista will add additional breadth and expertise in areas of great interest to the Alliance.”
MontaVista is the provider of MontaVista® Linux Carrier Grade Edition operating system software. “Carrier grade” is a term for software and hardware products that support public telecommunications and data communications networks. Carrier grade products require extremely high degrees of reliability, scalability, and performance to provide an uninterrupted flow of the enormous volume of high-bandwidth data and voice needed for today’s multimedia communications.
Equipment running MontaVista Linux is deployed in the networks of many of the world’s largest telecommunications carriers. According to William Weinberg, independent analyst and former OSDL CGL initiative leader, MontaVista® Linux Carrier Grade Edition is the most widely-deployed Linux in the carrier grade market.
“Many leading NEPs are MontaVista customers. We joined SCOPE to share our experience in support of the Alliance’s mission to promote open standards for interoperable carrier grade software,” said Dan Cauchy, director of marketing, carrier and mobile products, MontaVista. “MontaVista has contributed to carrier grade Linux specifications and features for more than six years. We are glad to contribute our expertise to help SCOPE meet its goals.”
