Xilinx, Inc. (Nasdaq: XLNX), the world’s leading supplier of programmable solutions, announced that its XtremeDSP(TM) solutions enabled the latest high definition digital recording system (PEGASUS), designed and manufactured by Thomson, a leading provider of award-winning digital video and graphics solutions for professionals and enthusiasts. Leveraging Xilinx(R) DSP-optimized Virtex(TM)-4 SX platform and development tools, the Canopus engineering team for Thomson developed and implemented the complicated algorithms required to deliver intra frame image compression.
“The Xilinx DSP design environment and DSP-optimized FPGAs provided our development team with the performance and ease-of-use to meet on-time delivery of our PEGASUS high definition digital recorder,” said Atsushi Tabuchi, deputy general manager, development group, at Thomson.
The Virtex-4 SX platform provided Thomson the ability to support real-time audio and HD video processing, compression encoding/decoding and high-speed signal processing. The DSP slices available in the XtremeDSP(TM) Virtex-4 family enable very high performance signal processing applications, while delivering low power consumption and efficient silicon utilization. With availability of up to 512 DSP slices operating at 500 MHz, each DSP slice supports 18-bit by 18-bit, two complement multipliers, and over 40 dynamically controlled operating modes including; multiplier, multiplier-accumulator, multiplier-adder/subtractor, three input adder, barrel shifter, wide bus multiplexers, or wide counters. Each DSP slice consumes only 2.3 mW/100 MHz, at a typical toggle rate of 38 percent, providing six percent lower power consumption.
