The Embedded Microprocessor Benchmark Consortium(R) (EEMBC) announced publication of certified benchmark scores for NXP Semiconductors’ PNX1702 Media Processor, a system-on-chip device intended to perform video, audio, graphics, and general-purpose control processing.
Tested against EEMBC’s ConsumerBench(TM) digital imaging and DENBench(TM) digital entertainment suites, the PNX1702 achieved exceptionally high scores for a 499.5 MHz device, with out-of-the-box scores of 89.9 Consumermarks and 94.4 DENmarks. With full optimizations making use of the PNX1702′s SIMD operations, the device achieved a score of 386 Consumermarks, the highest ever achieved for this EEMBC suite and besting a previous PNX1702 score of 342.9 Consumermarks that was obtained with a previous-generation compiler.
Using the TCS5.01 compiler, the PNX1702 was also tested against EEMBC’s AutoBench(TM) automotive/industrial and TeleBench(TM) telecommunications benchmark suites. All scores were certified by the EEMBC Technology Center and are summarized in the table below.

“NXP’s new PNX1702 scores are significant for a number of reasons, not the least of which is how they demonstrate the positive impact of an improved compiler on device performance,” said Markus Levy, EEMBC president. “They also show the value of applying architecture-specific optimizations to demonstrate the capabilities that system designers can achieve in real-world applications. This point is evident in the approximate fourfold improvement in optimized AutoBench and ConsumerBench scores over the out-of-the-box tests, and even more outstanding in the 17X improvement shown for TeleBench.”
The PNX1702 contains a high-performance 32-bit VLIW processor, the TriMedia TM5250, capable of multi-standard digital video decoding/encoding and image improvement, audio signal processing, and general-purpose control processing. It can either be used in standalone implementations or as an accelerator to a general-purpose processor. The PNX1702 processes input signals by utilizing several audio/video and co-processor modules before sending them to external peripherals. These modules provide additional video and data processing bandwidth without using CPU cycles. The combination of the CPU and co-processor modules makes the PNX1702 suitable for a wide range of digital entertainment applications, especially those requiring a high level of processing power and throughput at a reduced cost.
