TI Debuts ADS5474 14-bit 400 MSPS Analog-to-Digital Converter
Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) (NYSE: TXN) introduced the industry's fastest monolithic 14-bit analog-to-digital converter (ADC) at 400 mega samples per second (MSPS). The new ADC provides unmatched performance of 11.1 effective number of bits (ENOB) at this speed, enabling high-bandwidth applications such as test and measurement instrumentation, software-defined radio, radar systems and communication instrumentation that were previously confined to lesser resolution ADCs.
Enabled by TI's proprietary BiCom3 process technology, the ADS5474 integrates an on-chip buffer amplifier to ease analog front-end (AFE) design. The buffer amplifier eliminates sample-and-hold kick-back and provides a high input impedance over time and frequency, simplifying the AFE design for wide bandwidth applications from DC to intermediate frequencies (IF) well above 200 MHz. Additionally, the ADS5474 is pin-for-pin compatible to the ADS5463 12-bit, 500-MSPS ADC, in a space-saving 14-mm x 14-mm package, providing an easy design path across multiple systems using TI ADCs.
The 400-MSPS sample rate provided by the ADS5474 with 70-dBFS signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) through first Nyquist and 69-dBFS SNR through second Nyquist offers a number of benefits to the customer in these applications:
- Improves transmit power amplifier linearization and efficiency when used in conjunction with a digital pre-distortion algorithm, lowering total system cost
- Enables sampling of larger bandwidths in radar systems, resulting in enhanced tracking resolution and object discrimination
- Allows software-defined radios to implement a greater number of standards with higher sensitivity
- Enables 14-bit resolution with 200-MHz bandwidth for high-speed digitizers, spectrum analyzers, test and measurement equipment and general data acquisition systems
TI further eases customers' designs with the entire high-performance signal chain offering. For example, customers are able to combine the ADS5474 with a TI high-speed amplifier (such as THS4520, THS4509 or THS9001) and clock synchronizer and jitter cleaner (CDCM7005). In addition, systems solutions will benefit from TI's portfolio of high performance digital-to-analog converters, RF solutions, and digital up and down converters.
Availability and Packaging
The ADS5474 is available now in an 80-pin TQFP PowerPAD(TM) package (14 mm x 14mm) and is priced at $150.00 each in 1,000-piece quantities. Samples and evaluation modules (EVMs) are available.
TI offers analog engineers a wide-ranging support infrastructure that includes training and seminars, design tools and utilities, technical documentation, evaluation modules, an online KnowledgeBase, a product information hotline and a comprehensive offering of samples that ship within 24 hours of request.
