A high processing performance, unique multimedia features and extreme low power consumption are the outstanding capabilities combined in the CPU module EXM32-AU1250 from MSC Vertriebs GmbH. The device is designed especially for harsh industrial environment and complies to the System-On-Module-Standard EXM-32 developed by MSC.
The EXM32-AU1250 is based on the RMI(TM) Alchemy(TM) Au1250(TM) RISC-CPU with 16 kB Data and 16 kB Instruction Cache. It is available in two models. In the commercial variant, specified for a temperature range from 0 to 70 °C, the processor operates at a clock frequency of 600MHz. The variant for the industrial temperature range (-40 to +85 °C) operates at 500MHz. Up to 256 MB DDR2-SDRAM and a maximum of 128 MB NOR-Flash are provided on the board. On demand up to 512 MB NAND-Flash can be integrated in addition.
The impressive multimedia features of this CPU module comprise the support of MPEG1/2/4, but also video decoding of WMV and DivX. The LCD UMA graphic controller offers a maximum resolution of 1600 x 900 pixels. Beside connections for a flat panel, a CRT and an 8-bit wide BT.656 camera, a number of I/O interfaces are available for a high amount of flexibility. 2 x UART und 2 x USB 2.0 High Speed (Host/Client) are supplemented by a 10/100BaseT-LAN interface, 2 x CAN 2.0B, 2 x I²C, 2 x SPI, 2 x HSDI ports and audio interfaces in AC’97 or I²S versions. In addition, two FireWire IEEE1394a interfaces are possible. For data storage, connections for SD cards, CompactFlash and IDE are supported.
The very compact CPU module with the dimensions of 65 x 90 mm is attached to the carrier board using stable elastomeric connectors. To expand the I/O functionality, further modules can be easily mounted on top of the CPU board due to the special connecting technology. Thanks to the low power dissipation of 2.5 W, no active cooling is required. As for all EXM components, the EXM32-AU1250 also conforms to the DIN EN 60068 (Environmental Conditions for Electrical and Electronic Equipment for Road Vehicles).
The CPU module is targeted for multimedia applications in portable video games, large screen information systems and all kinds of display systems besides the areas of industrial, automotive and medical usage.
For evaluation and design-in of EXM32 components, development platforms and starter kits are available from MSC. Furthermore, the manufacturer offers support during the development of customer specific carrier boards.
