MontaVista(R) Software, Inc., the leading provider of Linux(R) for intelligent devices and communications infrastructure, announced its support for Freescale Semiconductor’s new Multi-Core Communications Platform. MontaVista Linux and MontaVista’s developer tools will take advantage of Freescale’s innovative multi-core architecture to enable device designers and embedded application developers to create new products that are dramatically faster, better integrated, and more power-efficient.
Freescale and its customers look to MontaVista Linux, the most widely deployed commercial embedded Linux operating system, to provide real-time capabilities in multi-core processors today. MontaVista Linux Professional Edition supports Freescale’s MPC8641D Dual Core offering today, and will support Freescale’s MPC8572 Dual Core e500-based Power Architecture(TM) processor later this year.
“We enable Linux development on dozens of Freescale processors, and we are excited about the performance breakthroughs of the new Multi-Core Communications Platform,” said James Ready, chief technical officer and founder of MontaVista. “Our experience with Freescale and in supporting multi-core offerings allows us to simplify the development challenges with virtualization and other support technologies that enable flexibility in system design so developers can take advantage of Freescale’s many features.”
“We appreciate how MontaVista Linux accelerates product launches for Power Architecture developers,” said Jeff Timbs, director of marketing for Freescale’s Networking Systems Division. “By supporting Freescale’s new Multi-Core Platform and its ecosystem of enablement, MontaVista can expect to accelerate and streamline development of embedded multi-core Linux applications based on advanced Freescale products.”
MontaVista’s market-leading operating system and developer tools provide the ideal platform for design teams looking to leverage the power of open source Linux for rapid product delivery on Freescale processors. Design teams benefit from full maintenance and support on the thoroughly tested MontaVista software, which has shipped in more than 40 million units worldwide. Risk factors are dramatically reduced because MontaVista continually tests, hardens, and integrates community bug fixes and patches.
