Sigma Designs (Nasdaq: SIGM), the leader in digital media processing for consumer electronics, together with Syabas Technology, Inc, a leading middleware provider for digital home media players, introduced the “Networked Media Tank” (NMT[tm]), a combination Digital Media Adapter (DMA), peer-to-peer (P2P) file download engine, Network-Attached Storage (NAS) and Media Server in a single device. This allows a feature rich implementation that fully utilizes the significant processing capability of Sigma’s SMP8630 series of media processors.
The Syabas NMT provides for playback of high-definition content in a variety of formats including Microsoft WMV9 and Apple Quicktime H.264 up to 1080p and is also capable of serving such content from its built-in hard-disk via its digital living room network alliance (DLNA) compliant and CE-HTML media servers. Basic and user friendly NAS function provides for easy file access through Windows/Mac file share.
As a result of being Windows Media Connect (WMC) and DLNA compliant, it works natively and seamlessly with Windows Vista and Windows XP SP2 OS, thus requiring no additional media server software to be installed. This implementation also enables support for premium content playback with Windows DRM. Additionally, the Syabas NMT is also capable of performing P2P file downloading and playing them back later from the integrated NAS, further off-loading this function that is traditionally handled by a PC.
“Syabas has developed a cleverly integrated software package that enables an embedded consumer product to offer the type of media sharing and connectivity that previously required a full PC,” said Ken Lowe, vice president of strategic marketing, Sigma Designs. “We are excited to be working together on a development that has the potential to change the consumer landscape.”
“As a result of the positive response following our initial OEM roll-out, we are now engaged with a number of significant customers that intend to integrate this capability into consumer products. This is in response to the popularity of the high definition playback format and the increasing presence of high definition TVs,” said TL Lim, president of Syabas Technology.
