QUALCOMM, VIA Telecom Support BREW Client Software on CDMA2000 Chipsets
QUALCOMM Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), a leading developer and innovator of advanced wireless technologies and mobile data solutions, and VIA Telecom Inc., a privately held fabless semiconductor company and developer of CDMA chipsets, announced a licensing agreement to integrate QUALCOMM's BREW(R) Client software onto VIA Telecom's line of CDMA2000(R) application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs). Under the terms of the worldwide agreement, QUALCOMM has granted VIA Telecom rights to incorporate the BREW software layer into the CDMA2000 chipsets that it sells to its wireless device manufacturer customers.
VIA Telecom initially plans to make its CDMA chipsets, featuring the BREW Client, available in July 2007. VIA Telecom will integrate the BREW Client in its CDMA products, offering its growing roster of device manufacturer partners a line of chipsets that have BREW pre-ported to them.
"The agreement with VIA Telecom highlights an important stage in the evolution of BREW and further validates the client software component of BREW as an open, chipset-agnostic technology," said Mitch Oliver, vice president of solutions and marketing for QUALCOMM Internet Services. "Entering into this agreement with VIA allows us to work with a leading manufacturer of chipsets that has a growing roster of OEM customers."
"VIA Telecom is dedicated to supporting our customers with the most advanced CDMA chipsets that fully meet their unique needs," said Nick Chen, vice president of product management for VIA Telecom. "We are pleased to enter into this agreement with QUALCOMM to port BREW to our chipsets, as it provides our customers with an excellent platform to deliver the full range of mobile applications that the market demands."
