Applied Micro Circuits Corporation (NASDAQ: AMCC), a global leader in embedded Power Architecture(TM) processing, optical transport and storage solutions, announced the second member of its embedded processor family for cost-sensitive wireless access platforms at this week’s Computex Conference in Taipei, Taiwan. The PowerPC(R) 405EXr is based on Power Architecture technology and delivers an optimized blend of price and performance for 802.11n (Wi-Fi(TM)) and WiMAX(TM)-based wireless access points, residential gateways and advanced set-top boxes (STBs).
“Featuring a tightly integrated SoC design that employs a new 90 nm version of the Power Architecture 405 core, the 405EXr offers an ideal combination of performance, lower power consumption and reduced cost,” said Sam Fuller, vice president of marketing at AMCC. “Designers will welcome the attractive price and embrace the 405EXr processor’s scalability and rich feature set, including PCI Express and Gigabit Ethernet interfaces as well as USB2.0 On-The-Go.”
The 405EXr is highly optimized for next generation WLAN applications and shares many features with the recently announced 405EX. While the 405EX is designed for enterprise class applications, the 405EXr, with a single lane of PCI Express and single Gigabit Ethernet port, is optimized for small or medium businesses, residential gateways and high-end SOHO applications. The 405EXr PCI Express interface provides up to 2.5Gbps of sustained throughput for connectivity for high performance 802.11n or WiMAX radio chipsets, or to other PCI Express-based chipsets. The internal bus architecture, security acceleration and integrated Gigabit Ethernet Media Access Controller (MAC) ensure that the full bandwidth of even the fastest 802.11n radios will be available. The high level of integration in the 405EXr SoC reduces the external components required for next generation WLAN access designs, which reduces systems complexity and bill of material cost. The result is faster time-to-market and lower cost products.
Optimal Price / Performance Balance
The Power Architecture core of the 405EXr delivers a frequency range up to 667 MHz and is capable of delivering over 1,000 DMIPS of processing performance. A cross bar-based, on-chip system interconnect provides low latency and increased bandwidth connectivity to a high-performance DDR2 SDRAM controller for main memory and to the PCI Express and Gigabit Ethernet interfaces. The sub 1.5 watt typical power dissipation of the 405EXr enables 802.11n access point designs to successfully operate below the 12.5 watt typical power of the 802.3af standard for Power-over-Ethernet (PoE). The excellent price/performance balance of the 405EXr makes it an affordable choice for meeting the demanding requirements of next generation access designs.
The 405EXr features a best-in-class Turbo Security Engine that supports standard IPSec(TM), SSL and DTLS security protocols. The Turbo Security Engine attaches directly to the processor bus for the fastest possible system throughput. The engine also features Public Key Acceleration and True Random Number Generation, as well as full header/trailer protocol processing. It is compliant with FIPS-140-2 and ANSI X9.17 Annex C.
The 405EXr includes a triple-speed USB 2.0 On-the-Go port capable of up to 480 Mbps which can be configured as either a device or host. A NAND Flash Controller and a full suite of Serial I/O ports, including UART, IIC, SPI and 32-bit external peripheral bus are additional key connectivity capabilities of the 405EXr.
Power Architecture processors from AMCC are supported by more than a hundred third-party vendors through the Embedded Tools Program. This support program includes compilers, debuggers, RTOS, emulators, logic analyzers and a full range of tools to assist manufacturers in developing products more quickly. In addition, AMCC will provide full evaluation kits for the 405EX and 405EXr processors.
Availability and Pricing
The 405EXr will sample in the third quarter of 2007. Distributor suggested resale pricing will start at $14 in 10Ku volumes. Further details on the 405EXr, including technical specifications, can be found on the AMCC website.
