The WiMAX Forum(R) has brought 33 companies from the Mobile WiMAX(TM) equipment and test equipment communities together for the third public Mobile WiMAX PlugFest, an interoperability showcase hosted by AT4 Wireless and ETSI in Sophia Antipolis, France. The PlugFest kicked off on Sunday, May 13, 2007 and concludes on Saturday, May 19, 2007.
Companies participating in the WiMAX Forum-sponsored event include the following system and chipset suppliers: Airspan Networks, Alcatel–Lucent, ApaceWave Technologies, Aperto Networks, Beceem, Fujitsu, GCT Semiconductor, Inc., Intel Corporation, Motorola, Navini Networks, NEC Corporation, Nortel, PicoChip, POSDATA, Redline Communications, Runcom Technologies Ltd., Samsung, Sanyo, SEQUANS Communications, SOMA Networks, Telsima, Wavesat, XRONet and ZTE Corporation. In addition to these suppliers, nine test equipment vendors supported the event, including Aeroflex, Agilent, Anite Telecoms Ltd., AT4 wireless, Anritsu Limited, Azimuth Systems, Elektrobit, Rohde & Schwarz and Sanjole.
“WiMAX Forum members are ready to start the global adoption of Mobile WiMAX as the broadband wireless internet technology of choice enabling mobile internet anytime, anywhere,” said Ron Resnick, president and chairman of the WiMAX Forum. “As more and more companies enter the WiMAX space, we will continue to offer those companies a way to ensure that their products are interoperable and will provide their customers the best WiMAX experience possible.”
This is the first time WiMAX Forum will test key mobility features such as MIMO and beamforming, which are smart antenna technologies. Benefits of such technologies include faster broadband speeds, better coverage and capacity. Handover will also be tested, where a terminal is handed off between two base stations, simulating a mobile environment.
Testing observations and results will be available after the conclusion of the event, however, because of non-disclosure agreements among vendors, testing companies and the WiMAX Forum, interoperability results between specific vendors is not released.
