SMC(R) Networks announced that CableLabs(R) has certified its newest product for the Cable Service Provider market, the EZ Connect(TM) E-MTA (SMC8414WG), for compliance with the PacketCable(TM) 1.5 and DOCSIS(R) 2.0 specifications in its Certification Wave 50.
The new SMC8414WG EZ Connect Embedded Multimedia Terminal Adapter (E-MTA) broadband telephony modem integrates both an Ethernet port and a USB port for data traffic, and two PacketCable Voice over IP (VoIP) ports. The new EZ Connect SMC8414WG will be available to Cable Providers beginning in June, 2007.
“Service providers, large and small, need solutions that open opportunities for them to provide more services — but those solutions need to be remotely-configurable and serviceable to maintain profitability,” said SMC product marketing manager, Mahesh Soni. “Products like this one prove that we’re committed to providing a broad range of functionality in cost-effective and technologically advanced devices that are easy to set-up and configure from the cable provider’s base. Certification of the product to CableLabs’ PacketCable and DOCSIS specifications ensures that our new embedded Multimedia Terminal Adapter meets their strict requirements for interoperability with cable systems via protocol conformance.”
This new SMC EZ Connect E-MTA is certified for interoperability with PacketCable and DOCSIS cable networks, and with other CableLabs Certified devices to deliver data as well as multimedia services. PacketCable is a CableLabs-led initiative to define a common platform to deliver advanced real-time multimedia communication services, such as Voice-over-Internet Protocol (VoIP), over two-way cable plant. The PacketCable Multimedia specification defines Quality of Service (QoS) and accounting capabilities that cable operators can use to offer a wide variety of enhanced multimedia services, such as video communications and interactive games, over their DOCSIS 1.1 or 2.0 networks. It’s an ideal solution for cable operators to introduce into the home and SOHO markets.
