Cypress Semiconductor Corp. (NYSE:CY) introduced two new evaluation kits for its fast-growing PSoC(R) mixed-signal arrays. The kits, which address pyroelectric infrared (PIR) motion detection and I2C port expansion, give designers easy-to-use tools to quickly and efficiently complete PSoC designs for a variety of applications.
The PIR Motion Detection Evaluation Kit contains all of the hardware and software necessary to implement motion detection applications using a PIR motion sensor intelligently controlled by one Cypress PSoC device — the CY8C27443. Contents of the kit include the PIR motion sensor circuit board, a 12V power supply, a PSoC Designer(TM) integrated development environment (IDE) software CD, and a design files CD with schematics, BOM, Gerber files, and a PSoC Designer example project. The PIR Motion Detection Kit addresses applications such as automatic lighting controls, automatic door openers, security systems, kiosk wake-up and activating wireless cameras.
The I2C Port Expander Lite Evaluation Kit contains all of the hardware and software necessary to implement I2C bus I/O expansion, system management and front panel control in one Cypress PSoC I2C Port Expander device — the CY8C9520. The kit contains an I2C expander demo board, a USB cable, documentation and a design files CD. The I2C Port Expander Lite Evaluation Kit addresses applications that include PCs, servers, personal gaming consoles and storage and networking equipment.
“We are fond of saying, ‘PSoC is Everywhere,’ and these kits highlight the flexibility and ubiquity of the PSoC architecture,” said Scott Harmel, vice president of marketing for Cypress’s PSoC products. “Users can expect to see many other innovative solutions as we discover new applications that PSoC enables.”
Price and Availability
Both of the kits are available today for ordering on the Online Store. The CY3236A-PIRMOTION and CY3242-IOXLite kits both cost $98.99.
PSoC devices employ a highly configurable system-on-chip architecture for embedded control design, offering a flash-based equivalent of a field-programmable ASIC without lead-time or NRE penalties. PSoC devices integrate configurable analog and digital circuits, controlled by an on-chip microcontroller, providing both enhanced design revision capability and component count savings. They include up to 32 Kbytes of Flash memory, 2 Kbytes of SRAM, an 8×8 multiplier with 32-bit accumulator, power and sleep monitoring circuits, and hardware I2C communications.
The flexible PSoC resources allow designers to future-proof their products by enabling firmware-based changes during design, validation, production, and in the field. The unique PSoC flexibility shortens design cycle time and allows for late-breaking feature enhancements. All PSoC devices are also dynamically reconfigurable, enabling designers to morph internal resources on-the-fly, utilizing fewer components to perform a given task.
Easy-to-use development tools enable designers to select configurable library elements for analog functions such as amplifiers, ADCs, DACs, filters and comparators and digital functions such as timers, counters, PWMs, SPI and UARTs. The PSoC family’s analog features include rail-to-rail inputs, programmable gain amplifiers and up to 14-bit ADCs with exceptionally low noise, input leakage and voltage offset.
A single PSoC device can integrate as many as 100 peripheral functions saving customers design time, board space and power consumption while improving system quality. Customers can save from 5 cents to as much as $10 in system costs.
