DRS Technologies to Produce Embedded Diagnostic Kits for Tanks

DRS Technologies, Inc. (NYSE: DRS) announced that it received a $14 million contract to produce Sidecar(TM) Embedded Diagnostic Kits for the U.S. Marine Corps’ (USMC) entire fleet of battle tanks. The contract was awarded to DRS by the U.S. Army’s Tank & Automotive Command (TACOM) in Warren, Michigan, on behalf of the USMC.

The company’s DRS Test & Energy Management unit in Huntsville, Alabama, will produce and deliver the Sidecar(TM) kits. Deliveries of the kits are expected to start immediately and continue through December 2008.

The USMC has ordered the company’s Sidecar(TM) kits for other vehicles, but this is the first time they have been ordered for their M1A1 Abrams Main Battle Tanks. In the past, DRS has delivered Sidecar(TM) kits to the U.S. Army for their M1A1 Abrams Main Battle Tanks and provided training to soldiers on the system’s operational and maintenance procedures.

The Sidecar(TM) kits immediately identify and isolate vehicle electronic and electrical system faults, significantly reducing maintenance time and costs. They monitor and digitize analog or discrete system signals and provide the measurements to a high-speed data bus, allowing for real-time data collection and analysis. The kits receive power via the combined data/power Sidecar(TM) cable, with no interruption or expenditure of system power. Used in conjunction with a host controller, the Sidecar(TM) Data Acquisition Units provide a complete, embedded vehicle diagnostics solution.

“This contract is a milestone award for DRS, representing the first time we have had the opportunity to provide our proven, on-board, vehicle diagnostics system for the U.S. Marine Corps’ M1A1 Abrams Main Battle Tank,” said Michael J. Sheehan, president of DRS’s Tactical Systems Strategic Business Unit. “The Sidecar(TM) is targeted for installation on the entire fleet of USMC tanks and reflects our customer’s commitment to the long-term sustainability of its heavy ground combat fleet. This new order affirms our position as a leading supplier of operationally-proven, electronic test and diagnostics equipment.”
