VirtualLogix(TM), the Real-Time Virtualization(TM) company, announced the availability of VLX Developer, which enables the rapid adoption of virtualization technology for embedded devices. The market demand for increased applications and functionalities in embedded devices has driven the use of virtualization software. VLX Developer’s Eclipse-based graphical environment helps designers easily configure, build and optimize virtualized platforms in which multiple operating systems (OSs) and their associated application stacks are consolidated onto shared hardware. By using an environment that developers are familiar with, the integration of virtualization into existing development processes is simplified.
VLX Developer provides a step-by-step process to define key hardware and software aspects of configuring and building multiple operating systems within a virtualized platform. In addition, the tool’s monitoring capabilities help developers analyze and tune the allocation of hardware resources to the operating systems, resulting in an optimal system design.
“The Eclipse Foundation’s maturity in the software marketplace is marked by the organization’s continued development of tools for growing technologies such as virtualization,” said Mike Milinkovich, executive director of the Eclipse Foundation. “VirtualLogix’s integration of its Real-Time Virtualization technology with Eclipse broadens the Foundation’s ecosystem of software tools for embedded devices.”
“Our Eclipse-based tools allow embedded software developers to easily integrate virtualization into their development process,” said Mark Milligan, vice president of marketing, VirtualLogix. “This marks the next phase in the adoption of virtualization technology into the mainstream embedded electronics market.”
Previously, VLX contained command line level controls for configuration and build of the system. The addition of a graphical environment allows developers to more quickly and easily accomplish these tasks, while also monitoring and displaying the performance of data.
- Configuration: Allows different guest OSs to be configured with respect to memory partition, root file system, console output and other parameters.
- Build: Allows developers to select each component of the system such as an OS, the virtualization engine, or a root file system. Then build each component and link the components together, resulting in a system memory image.
- Monitor: Provides a graphical display of the CPU usage for each OS running on the platform and the time spent for each context switches between OSs. This enables users to evaluate, optimize and qualify system-level performance aspects of their virtualized platforms.
VLX Developer Tools provide pre-configured system profiles and defaults, while also enabling developers to easily adjust and add new parameters. VLX Developer is available either as an Eclipse plug-in or a standalone rich client platform (RCP) program.
VirtualLogix will demonstrate VLX Developer at the Embedded Systems Conference in San Jose, Calif., April 3-5, at the TI Partner Pavilion Booth #1608A.
Pricing and Availability
VLX Developer is available now for VirtualLogix VLX products and is licensed on an annual per seat basis. VLX Developer is also included in certain product development license configurations with additional seats available separately.
