Renesas Launches 16-bit Microcontroller with Ethernet Controller

Renesas Technology America, Inc. announced the H8S/2472F, a new member of the popular H8S series that is the company’s first 16-bit microcontroller incorporating an Ethernet controller. The 34-MHz device with built-in flash memory is optimized for use in low-end servers, communications equipment and building automation systems. Besides the Ethernet controller, it offers a comprehensive set of peripheral functions, including a USB peripheral function (with Full-Speed support), I2C bus, and LPC (low pin count) bus, allowing connection to a variety of peripheral systems. Its compact (13mm x 13mm), 176-pin BGA (Ball Grid Array) package allows the design of small, low-power systems.

The Ethernet controller module that is incorporated into the H8S/2472 is the same field-proven design used in the devices in Renesas Technology’s 32-bit SuperH(R) family. Thus, the H8S/2472F makes it simple to implement network connectivity for sharing and managing information with other systems. The microcontroller’s IEEE802.3-standard-compliant media access controller (MAC) enables connections to a 10/100Mbps (megabit per second) Ethernet LAN, eliminating the need for an external dedicated Ethernet chip and allowing system size and cost reductions. The H8S/2472 is an enhanced version of the highly successful H8S Family of microcontrollers, offering stronger, higher speed communication capabilities. It is fully software compatible with other Renesas H8S devices.

For connections to a variety of external subsystems, embedded systems and peripheral devices, the H8S/2472F provides the previously mentioned USB Function and I2C and LPC buses, as well as a synchronous serial communication unit (SSU). Other on-chip functions include an 8-channel 10-bit analog-to-digital (A/D) converter, 16-channel event counter (EVC), data transfer controller (DTC), bus-state controller (BSC), 8-bit and 16-bit timers, watchdog timer, and more. The 3.3-volt device has a H8S/2600 CPU core with a built-in multiply-accumulate function. Flash memory size is 512Kbytes and RAM size is 40Kbytes.

Support tools are available to facilitate the system design process. Renesas offers an integrated development environment with software tools, evaluation boards, and the low-cost Renesas E10A on-chip debug emulator.
