Azimuth Systems, Inc., the leading provider of Wi-Fi engineering test equipment, announced that Symbian, the company that develops and licenses Symbian OS(TM), the market leading operating system for smartphones, has selected the AzCert(TM) Wi-Fi Certification Test Suite for Test Engine-enabled devices to help streamline performance, interoperability and certification testing of Symbian smartphones.
Symbian enables a thriving ecosystem of partners, handset vendors, operators, developers and other key mobile players that create value for the growing smartphone market. This value is cultivated by the continuing development and commercialization of new software solutions and award-winning applications for Symbian OS. With IDC’s forecast of cumulative global shipments of smartphones due to pass the one billion mark by 2011, Symbian OS represents one of the biggest commercial opportunities in mobile.
“By building support for the Test Engine approach into their products, Symbian is advancing the testing of converged handsets,” said Jeff Abramowitz, vice president of marketing at Azimuth Systems. “Operators are pressing phone vendors for ‘carrier-grade’ Wi-Fi support, and Azimuth’s automated test solutions enable smartphone vendors to deliver high performance Wi-Fi solutions efficiently.”
The AzCert Wi-Fi Certification Test Suite for Test Engine-enabled devices is used by Wi-Fi Alliance Authorized Test Laboratories (ATLs) to streamline the certification process for a broad range of products with embedded Wi-Fi connectivity that includes smartphones, MP3 players and games. The AzCert suite allows vendors to pre-test their devices according to the new Wi-Fi Alliance Test Engine architecture – using the same approach as the ATLs. In a related announcement last week, Azimuth also introduced the Fixed-Mobile Convergence Performance Test solution that leverages the Test Engine architecture for performance testing of Wi-Fi-enabled phones.
The Azimuth Approach
Azimuth’s unique testing approach provides unmatched repeatability, flexibility and automation for wireless device and network testing. The six key elements of the Azimuth Approach include: DIRECTOR(TM) test executive to provide an easy-to-use console for test and device management; STUDIO(TM) database management software for automated report generation and correlation of test results; a Real2Real(TM) architecture that enables interoperability testing between real world devices; TestMAC(R) technology to emulate clients and APs and to perform protocol behavior tests; SmartMotion(TM) technology to precisely control virtual motion between devices in the network and RadioProof(R) enclosures that isolate the RF environment.
Symbian is a software licensing company that develops and licenses Symbian OS, the market leading open operating system for advanced, data-enabled mobile phones, also known as smartphones. Symbian licenses Symbian OS to the world’s leading handset manufacturers and has built close co-operative business relationships with leading companies across the mobile industry. During 2006, 51.7 million Symbian smartphones were sold worldwide to over 250 major network operators, bringing the total number of Symbian smartphones shipped up to December 31, 2006 to 110 million. Symbian has its headquarters in London, United Kingdom with offices in the United States, Europe (England and Sweden (UIQ Technology AB)), Israel and Asia (India, P.R. China, Korea, and Japan).
