TriQuint Increases Market Share of Wireless Handset Modules

TriQuint Semiconductor (Nasdaq: TQNT), a leading manufacturer of highly integrated RF front-end modules for wireless handsets, announced that it has shipped over 50 million of the world’s smallest quad-band GSM/GPRS transmit (Tx) modules to wireless device manufacturers in China and Korea. The announcement comes during the International IC China Conference and Exhibition in Shenzhen, Beijing and Shanghai where TriQuint is exhibiting its next generation of QUANTUM Tx Modules(TM), which includes new products for higher-data-rate EDGE handsets as well as those targeting GSM/GPRS entry-level markets.

TriQuint’s Tx modules have been adopted by Korean manufacturers LG Electronics(R) and Samsung Electronics(R) along with Spreadtrum(R), a leading Chinese wireless handset platform developer.

“TriQuint’s China operation has more than tripled, now offering support through a local engineering application lab and fully staffed offices in Shanghai and Shenzhen,” remarked Mr. Richard Lin, TriQuint’s Director of Sales for Asia. “Our 6x6mm GSM/GPRS transmit module was a primary driver for our revenue growth of almost 30% in China from 2005 to 2006. We now serve the majority of wireless handset makers based in China, including some of the largest local brands. TriQuint’s focused product design and manufacturing strategy meets the needs of handset makers who want reduced time-to-market using highly integrated products for next-generation devices, as well as those in entry-level, emerging markets. That approach has been warmly received in China.”

TriQuint’s Tx modules integrate a quad-band power amplifier (PA) with a switch, low-pass filters, PA and switch controller with all necessary matching and ESD protection circuitry in a 6x6x1.1mm form factor. Having set the industry size standard at 36mm-sq area in 2005, TriQuint’s products remain a marketplace breakthrough in 2007, offering savings of roughly 60% in phone board area to create space for sought-after multimedia applications and connectivity features that consumers favor.

Mr. Vincent Wang, Senior Director of Operations at leading Chinese wireless handset platform developer Spreadtrum(R) commented, “The product’s small size and ease of use, not to mention optimization to the transceiver, were important factors in our decision to use TriQuint’s module. We’ve been very pleased. The module helped us save PC board area and shortened the design cycle. Its high degree of integration led to good responses from our customers and we’re looking forward to evaluating future generations of the product.”

The successful shipment of more than 50 million of TriQuint’s 6x6mm quad-band transmit modules has led to the development of succeeding generations that were announced in February at the 2007 GSM World Congress in Barcelona, Spain as part of the company’s “Global Handset Strategy.”

“Our new QUANTUM Tx Module(TM) family addresses the need for higher data-rate EDGE systems as well as entry-level GSM/GPRS products. EDGE systems are showing strong growth across Asia, Europe, and the United States whereas emerging entry-level markets require only dual-band GSM/GPRS capability without roaming,” said Mr. Tim Dunn, TriQuint Vice President for Handsets. “The QUANTUM Tx Module(TM) family includes the TQM6M5001, for EDGE quad-band applications and the TQM6M4028, our entry-level dual-band GSM/GPRS product; both provide size and pin-compatibility with the GSM/GPRS-only products we celebrate today. As the needs of handset manufacturers in China and around the world grow, TriQuint is ready with a new generation of the world’s smallest, most highly-integrated transmit modules.”
